I've got the sled dialed in, clutching , jetting etc. But I'm going to freshen the motor
and I am wondering if it is worth porting it ? I run a SLP single pipe.
I really don't want to turn this thing into a finicky sled that needs to be jetted or
reclutched everytime the weather changes. I want just a nice reliable riding experience
with maybe some more power

Making porting changes to VES engine is not recomended. What is good is to port match everything. Match the header pipe to the exhaust port, including the gaskets. Do the same to the intake port, match the intake flanges to the intake ports. This will help with air flow. Also get the SLP Airhorn kit, it will also increase air flow, and in most cases you will not have to increase main jet size.

^^ pretty much. Just cleaning up the sloppy factory work can really help. I did this on my old race bike and it helped alot. There was lots of flashing in the ports and the transitions weren't exactly smooth. Lots of unneeded turbulence.

My buddy has a ported VES 700 Edge (not just touched up), recut head, and twin pipes...It runs very well...much better than stock and will easily outrun stock 800s. He's running 10-64s with a 62/46.46 helix and turning 8200 rpm. He was running 10-64s and a 62.44.46 helix and turning 7900 rpm before the mods, if that gives you an idea on the increase. PM Indyhead about his ported 700VES setup. You'd have to have the head recut too, so you'd be looking at ~$500 depending on the shop, and you'd be stuck running 92+ octane.

i'd do the head, but wouldn't port unless i was prepared to do twins or possibly a big bore (in which case you HAVE to port)... every single reputable builder i talk to says ~6hp... unless you are willing to go for 110oct race fuel... no thanks...

I've been told the same for the 800's.....5-6 HP. Not cost effective IMO.

Well I've already got an INDYHEAD head, ported carb boots etc, so it looks like it remains
stock !

I've got Robs head with the SLP pipe and Boyesen's with flowrites and can pull 10-66's almond/blue up front - 70-44.46 with red/blue on the driven with no problems with clutch heat or boggyness at all. Pulls 8000 (calibrated) consistently. If you don't have a Tempaflow, I recommend it. It will add to consistency. BTW 440's work real well at sea level to 1000ft. Use the tempa screw to fine tune it.
