All,

Can anyone provide some good places to ride in the Muskoka area? Do you know of any cabins/hotels in the gravenhurst/huntsville, etc. area that are sled friendly?

We did about 1000 miles in northern Mi last year as it is only 4.5 hrs from Windsor. We're hoping to spend more time in around the Muskoka area this year as we hear the trail systems are much smoother and the overall ride is excellent. But we cannot seem to locate anyone advertising cabins/hotels, etc. that are right along the trail.

Any help/ideas are greatly appreciated!

Bookers is on Clear Lake just north of Huntsville, Novar area, right on the water, minutes to the Seguin, also you can try the Nordic Inn in Dorset, shit, there's tonnes of places.

It depends on what you're looking for by way of accomodations. For me, I could give a shit what the accomodations are like, so long as there is a roof and heat, i'm there to ride.

Good luck

Pzl........I would recommend Huntsville over Gravenhurst. Just east of Huntsville has one of the best sledding areas anywhere........ Dwight and Dorset. Tall pines has great trails and lots of lake running. Lake of Bays is normally not safe until 3rd or 4th week of January. Fancy expensive places in Deerhurst...Deerhurst Resort, Delta Resorts (Grandview and Rocky Crest). Closer to Dorset and cabin style, there is Sandy Lane Resort or the Fire House. Algonquin Inn is in Dwight. Most places are advertised on the trail maps.
Happy sleeding!

Hi PzI

Strange you cannot find the info as there are so many sites to go to on the Internet. OFSC for example is one. But try ontariotravel.net <info@ontariotravel.ems02.com>. There is enough info there to keep you on your computer for a few hours. You are looking for District 10 by the way. Go crazy by clicking on Packages.

We live about 100m East of SooON and did the UP to Baraga for 7 yrs. If you have not considered the area North of SooON you are missing out. From Searchmont the North opens up from Wawa to Chapleau, etc. If you are interested and depending on how many in your group I have a place for you to stay in Searchmont that will blow you away but you bring your own food etc.

Keep smiling and good luck, Jab66

Thanks guys for the input. Those last few websites really made the difference.

It would appear there is a tonne of riding in that area... just praying now for snow!!!

There is also the Haliburton Forest for the early season riding, as they are usually in full operation by mid Dec, they also have accomodations right on site. Try checking out www.ontarioconditions.com they have lots of links to hotels and resorts in those ares.

I think I'm gonna plan a ride in the Lake Placid area this winter, after seeing some brochures, and maps of the area, I want to check it out, lots of snow too apparently

Good Luck, Kevo

There are tonnes of great riding spots under 5 hours from windsor.

Burks falls - great snow, early season riding, few lakes, best grooming -try pickerell lake lodge 1-800-461-5582

anywhere east of haliburton is golden - try pinstone (now a delta)$$ but sweet 1800 461 0357

don't discount north of Fergus up to owen sound when the snow is good they have great grooming as well.

Love the paudash trial blazers area in Apsley (40 min north of Peterborough) stay at the martin wood resort 1877-552-0970

Bracebridge is really busy but lots of access to trails - the Sleep Inn has rooms for around 100 per nite some with jacuzzies. The main D trail goes right thorough the parking lot. There is a Kelseys attached, but watch for spot checks all day on saturdays (OPP). CDN tire and tim hortons just accross the street.

Hope this helps

Jabb.....We're planning a trip up your way this winter. Starting from Dorset we will head to a friends camp near Whitefish Falls. We want to get to Hearst....Looks like we have 2 choices Elliott Lake to Chapleau or Searchmont to Wawa?? The later looks longer but which would you recommend. Keep in mind, we won't be bringing our own food with us and we like bars and the fun that goes with that! I haven't checked distances yet but it looks like Whitefish to Wawa would be no problem for a days ride? Any info you can give me would be appreciated. My email is jhcherry@sympatico.ca

I second Booker's on Clear Lake. The Seguin runs directly behind that lake. You can head south from there and ride the Muskoka area or head north and ride the near north trail system. Near north has excellent trails and far less traffic then the Muskoka area.

Hi Dawg

Spent at least 1/2 hr yesterday replying to you. Find out today (for some reason) it was not posted. Could be I clicked wrong to send. I had stated that although you gave me your e-mail add decided to post on the forum in case someone else might have better input. I will now try to repeat my message but will probably cut it shorter.

First thing. Conditions have been bad around here for past 3 - 4 yrs. Can't seem to get started well before middle of Feb. Do a lot of lake running to connect w/trails so need cold weather also. If you book your stay ahead it's always a good idea to ask about cancellation policy. Now for your trip.

Why Dorset? I notice that one member backed up by another suggested Dorset. That's fine if you intend to sled in that area. But you are heading to Whitefish Falls. Then you would like to go to Wawa? Dorset puts you way to the East of Hwy11 below N.Bay I don't even think you will make it to W.F. Falls in one day. You have to inch your way across country to hit the C trail below Parry Sound then head North to Killarney then to W.F. Falls. I would stay around Parry Sound/Noble.

Now your in W.F. Falls and you want to go to Wawa (in one day?) If the big lake is pegged (which was not way til end of Feb last yr if I recall) you can make it to Spanish in no time. If not, you are not boxed in. You have to head north and trail from beyond Espanola to Spanish.

Get this now. You have to travel like hell West before you go North. For example, Spanish to S.S. Marie is about 180m. To Searchmont 30+m. To 1/2 Way Haven 90m. to Wawa 70m. This is all providing weather, conditions and signage are good. And providing you took to Big Lake (Huron) pegged to Spanish 60m. And then what? You have to come back now. So you would probably to to Chapleau (one day) come back to Elliot Lake and Spanish (one day) and stay at Vance's Motor Inn. Back track from there.

I suppose I could go on and on but I have no idea how long your stay is. I would probably suggest that you could head to Timmins via Shining Tree, Gogama then come back down to New Liskeard, Marten River, Crystal Falls and inch your way back down to where you are staying (Parry Sound etc) or if you insist....Dorset???

You could also go to Chapleau via Elliot Lake from Spanish then Timmins then back or vice versa. I'm getting tired just thinking about your trip. Take note last year (and this is our backyard) we went from Elliot Lake, Chapleau, Timmins, Cochrane, New Liskeard, Marten River Sudbury and back to E.L. Out of 5 days we had 2 good days. We have everything thrown at us you can imagine. Bad signage so turn arounds that screwed our schedules for fun and relaxation. One major sled accident and one major snow storm (blinding) where you could not see the trails, etc, etc. Not complaining here....it's all part of the experience. But you really have to be prepared, plan accordingly and plan smart. You don't show up in small towns in Norther ON without accommodations. It's amazing as you don't see that many sledders during the day until you reach your motel and your jaw drops....where the hell did they all come from?

Hope I was some help. Jabb 66 ( Keep smiling )

Thanks Jab66....Your post was posted and I responded but both are gone now. I 'll give you a shorter reply as well. I'm not from Windsor, our home base is Dorset area.

The only area we are not familar with is Spanish to Cochrane. Our decision will be whether to go from Spanish to Chapleau to Timmins or the much longer route Spanish to Soo to Wawa to Hornepayne to Cochrane. This trip will definitely happen in late February early March because of the big water and longer daylight.

FYI..We can get to Whitefish Falls in 1 day via Nipissing. Parry Sound is only 2-2.5 hours from Dorset via Lake of Bays if we were to go that route. I have heard of guys jumping on the big water at Parry Sound, but I know we won't go that route.

If your math is correct it would be 370m from Spanish to Wawa. Sounds like a big day, but if the big water is good, 180 miles will go quick! Should make Hearst or Kap for the 3rd night?? The 4th night Kirkland Lake? The 5th North Bay and then home? Sounds like a week max?? We could save a day by trailering to North Bay?

Ok don't waste any more time on me, we will figure it out. I appreciate advice and anyone else who wants to contribute.

happy sledding,
