do i need a screwdriver, wrench or a star bit to take drain plug out of my chaincase for an 2001 xc500?? thanks plan on doingit today if got time

I probably would probably line the bellypan with paper towels and pull the case.. lots of people have issues with pulling the drain plug and it would be a worse issue if the plug got boogered up while pulling it out..

pull the cover.. save some possible head ache.. IMPO

But if ya gona pull the plug

it's an allen wrench.. I would make sure the allen is clean and free of collected smeg.. then find the right size allen and tap it in with a hammer and give it a few good taps to be sure it's seated firmly and then attempt to loosen it..

I change mine every fall sometimes half way through the season.I don't have any problem with the allen wrench drain plug on the girls sled, that is 02 600 xcsp.I clean everthing all the time maybe thats why the drain plug comes out so easy. Good luck. The job is not hard at all.

Ya I've stripped a few belly pan bolts by not tapping it in :banghead:

I'm going to start removing the chain case cover from now and check the lower bolt sprocket. Since my lower bolt broke last year and left me haning 20 miles from civilization! Thank God I was not riding alone.

yeah, I stripped mine as well.

It does not leak now and I will use a suction pump of some sort from Princess Auto.

Lessons learned: go by the fingers first when tightening

Heres a good one....

Had my 05 XCSP 600 in the shop for studding during season as I had no time to do it, Had them gear the machine down at this time also.....

200 miles after they were in the chaincase I broke that bolt, Solo in a white-out, 25 miles from nowhere.

You don't know pissed till you could have seen me, THIS, AFTER telling them to check the bolt.

I work on my own sled now, Won't even trust them to change a plug.......

First bunch of dudes that happened by picked up this wounded sledder and made sure he got home OK, I never got your names but if your reading this......

:div20:

Someday perhaps I can return the favor!

Kidd!
