I need something answered. Hopefully someone on here can set me straight....
96 XLT......monoblock motor(597cc), .020 over. Have RPC Racing pipes to put on. These are the three seperate pipes with the three stinger mufflers right at the collector. I need to know where the carbs should be at.
Was running 200 mains with stock exhaust and no mods. Melted one piston last winter. Threw in 220's once it was all back together this fall. Can you tell me what a good setting would be for adding pipes??? What mains, needle setting, etc. would be good for me?? I'm thinking i'd need to go with way higher mains, but i don't know. Need someone to give me a good answer if possible. No mods done to the motor at all, except .020 over.
Some say to keep the clutch side piston richer than the other two as well.........
altitude=1,000 above sea level.
If you know of any carb setting sites that could help that would be cool.
Thanks alot dudes.

general rule of thumb when adding pipes, richen everything up and work down by reading plugs. go 3-4 sizes larger on the mains, a couple sizes larger on the pilots and raise the needles up 1 clip position and start there.

J,
Have you tried to ask the cook??? (RPC) Not trying to be a Smartass, but they had to a lot of R&D to produce them.

Yeah, i contacted RPC for info, and they barely knew what i was talking about. They said for such an old sled, they'd have to go back into paperwork, and try find it. Left numbers to call, but never could get anything out of them......uuughhh.

First off, 34mm carbs or 38's? With 200 mains I'm assuming 34's. With SLP's we got away with 210 mains on a 94, but you have to watch the temps. Call the OEM on the pipes for their recommendation. I think you ought to be at least 220's. If their 38mm, 290's.

I think RPC changed hands a couple years ago so they may not have kept the old documentation.

Well, got an e-mail from the contact at RPC Racing......He told me to wait a little bit for the RPC Racing home page to get done. He says to go to the tech section, and when the site is complete, the spec chart for apllications should be there..............this was two weeks ago.
I think i'll be doing as machz1 has said. I will go up to 240's, and up a couple pilot sizes, and raise the clip 1 notch, and work down from there. Hoping it'll work ok. Unless i should just stay with stock exhaust???? Have heard horror stories about adding triple pipes to these motors.
I have many buddies wanting to buy the triple pipes. Wondering if a little safer bet would be to sell them, and buy a slip-on canister. May be a little easier on her???

http://www.rpcracing.com/TechPages/POLARIS...NSTRUCTIONS.htmhttp://www.rpcracing.com/TechPages/POLARIS...UNING%20KIT.htm9. Adjust the air screw on each carb to 1.0 turns.
13. Raise the needles in each slide assembly to the fourth position. (Second richest)
Note: Above 25 degrees F it is possible to use 260 main jets and also to run the needles in the third (middle) position for improved throttle response and power. Caution; Never use these specifications when it is colder than 25 degrees F or engine failure may occur!
Fuel requirements : 92 octane minimum
RPM power range:9000 - 9400 RPM

You da man Reichards! Thanks for the info. Should i do the pilots as well?? Or is that something you mentioned already? And these are 34mm carbs..........are you still saying i should run at least 260's?? Or should i go higher to be safe. I don't want to run on the edge too much, so i would like it to run a bit rich.
Holy crap............is this thing gonna hit 9,000+ rpm with those bad boys??? It's an X-tra 12, so i know it ain't gonna break any records, just want to make some noise...lol.

LOWER the clip, not raise it.
