My buddy is looking at a used one with 2500 miles, track has some stud pull outs and chunks off lugs (no biggy can replace). trailing arm was repaired, owner has a new one to put on. Guy badly wants to get rid of it for $2000, what's it really worth? Also is the suspension real stiff, he's coming off a '97 Yamaha SX700. He wants a trail sled, but this looks like a good deal. Any comments? Thanks.

Seems like a good deal for two grand. I currently own a 2001 ProX 600 that I bought new. These sleds do ride stiff, not a softy trail sled. There was a revalve update for the shocks that same year. The stock valving was more of a snoX setup(same as the '01 Prox 440). The revalve update was more of a compliant cross country setup(still somewhat stiff). Both of the rebound and compression valve stacks in all four shocks were upgraded. As well as upgraded compression heads in the clicker assemblies. On my ProX the shocks have more of a custom revalve, a cross between the two setups and is awesome for my 190 pound frame when ridden aggressively. Make sure this upgrade was done or your friend will get the shit pounded out of him. As far as the lugs tearing on the track, the same thing has happened to mine. No big deal. Another thing that you need to be aware of is the coolant hose that comes from under the front of the motor is prone to wear. This is caused by the hose rubbing on the engine mounting strap. A couple of zip ties and oversize tubing can remedy the problem, duct tape also works. I hope this lengthy testimonial helps you out.

good sled for 2grand :div20: , just overhaul it and see what ya got and change all the fluids, check the clutches and rebuild and possibly revalve the shocks before snow.. 02.

All is true on the shock valving. I ride the 01 pro and have done the shock updates on many. The sled is just brutal on the trails with out the shock updates. Clutching stock is terrible. Sled over revs and doesn't make enough power. I run an epi red and 10-62 wiehgts in the primary and the thing is a rocket now. trailing arms do seem to bend on these. I bent one for no apparent reason. On the ski shocks the springs run on some of these, some don't. You can not get new bodies so if it rubs wrap the rub erea each season with electrical tape so that they don't wear out. There is a cross shaft that was added in 2003 to keep the front track host from being eaten by the track, This should be added. Also make sure that the foot wells don't rub a hole through the fuel tank. Mine might have but I slit some fuel line and put it over the sharp edge.

Thanks for the replies, but he bailed on it. stiff shocks made him shy away. So he's riding yellow, picked up a 98 MXZ 670. Any way thanks for the help.

well a pro x 600 would ride in circles around a mxz 670 suspension wise so i think that was a stupid choice, there are many good sleds out there from a variety of makers, but everythink before 01 i consider obsolete, and if he trailrides the pro x suspension can be tweaked to be awsome... maybe i should trade in my xr800 for a nice Yamaha exciter 570 -89? :div20:

I have a Pro-x so I know how well these sleds perform in the rough. I don;t really care what he buys, it's his money. I was trying to convince him to buy a Pro-x with some postive Pro-x comments/feedback, but he's in hurry to buy (money burning a hole), bought the mxz and then told me about it. Not much I can do.
