I was just wondering if anyone knows a good way to run my garmin eTrex off my Yamaha SRX. I dont have a battery on the sled. I hate replacing my gps batteeries every 3 hours so thats why i want to directly connect my gps off a headlight or something like that. I have tried to find regulators and other devies but nothing seems to work. Also i was wondering if anyone has any maps that i can put on my Garmin GPS for the L.P and U.P of michigan.
Thank-You,
Jon

Talk to your dealer and see what they sell for DC power outlets. Many sleds have the wiring harnesses built right into them, so all you have to do is install the outlet. Then you buy a DC power cord for the GPS and you're set.

I'd try the Polaris plug (part # 2872214) if you didn't want to make one.

I run my GPS with a 12v voltage regulator that converts the variable AC power from the sled's lighting coil to 12VDC. Here's a link to the schematic I used:
Voltage Regulator SchematicI've built two of these and both work perfectly. A couple of the parts on the list (I can't remember which ones) have been discontinued but Radio Shack carries substitute items. Find a sales clerk that knows electronics and they can advise you on a swap. Very basic electronics knowledge and some soldering skills are all that's needed to put it together.
The enclosure I used is about 1.5" wide by 3" long and maybe 1" deep. I mounted it behind the headlight access door under the hood and ran a cig lighter plug to the dash. Just plug the GPS power cord in and I'm ready to go. The only downside to this setup is that the regulator can't make 12VDC when the input drops below 12VAC so the power cuts out when the sled drops to a low idle for more than a few seconds. It comes right back when the engine speed increases though. The GPS can run on it's own batteries when that happens.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Not sure about those DC Kits. Most are designed to power a helmet shield which isn't anything but a resister. I suspect you would have 12-18 volts of AC power at the plug. The ETrex needs a maximum of 3 volts DC so a rectifier, filter and regulator are in order. How about just wiring it to a couple C or D Cell rechargables?

Yea that sounds like a good idea. how long do you think the batteries would last in cold weather(-10degress F). I also want to have the back light on 2407 when i ride at night. Thanks for the post though.

Maybe a small 12v battery can be mounted under the hood somewhere?
I bought a rechargeable battery pack that fits neatly into an oil caddy mounted under my hood! I have to recharge every couple of days, but it isn't really that big of a deal.

i had the polaris kit set up on my ZR and will be installing it on my xfire soon after i pick it up. It worked great. make sure it's grounded properly. i think i may have a post on this board somewhere (general forum maybe) from a couple years ago (fall 04) when i hooked it up. You'll need a multimeter to make sure it's putting out a constant 12-14 volts. if it's swinging up and down it's not hooked up right. Read the directions that came with the kit at least 5 times, give it a try then read them again.
When it's right it's sweet. Just need to keep the rechargable batteries for stops so it doesn't power down and have to reacquire.
Good Luck

Click to view attachmentI have been making these voltage convertors for sleds. For those who arent electronically savvy, it is easier than trying to make one yourself. But like said before, you will still need to keep batteries in the unit since the power will die once the sled is turned off. I sell these for $35 shipped to lower 48. Box size is 1x2x4, and can be smaller upon request to a 1x2x3. Fused input and output, quick disconnects with pigtails. Cig lighter adaptors can be added for another $5. 1 amp max circuit. The circuit is similar but not exact to the one referred to earlier on here. I can take paypal.
As far as the trail maps, go to www.sledtheweb.com and email David(webmaster) to see if you can purchase the trail maps. He may be the only one I know who would have that setup. I have part of the Muskegon/Oceana County sytem mapped, but it is not complete.

I installed a cigarette lighter plug on the sled to use the Garmin Cig lighter power cord. Problem was the vibrations would work the cord loose from the plug and I would lose power without realizing it.
I soldered the two wires from an RCA plug into the power cord and plug it into a heated visor type plug on the dash. This never comes loose, and I can still use the cig adapter in my truck. I keep the plug velcroed to the dash so it won't flop around.
I have the power plug hooked up to the battery in my sled, but if you don't have a battery, you can wire it up as explained above (just like a visor plug).
Good luck.

Snobooger-Thanks will have to try those out.
Carguy, nice setup on the GPS. I havent had an issue with my gps freezing up, but nice idea there. Nice looking setup too.
The convertors have been selling pretty good. Anyone in need of one?
PS 05 and newer LC skidoos even without a battery have a rectifier built in the regulator. The system puts out 15 volts dc after the regulator, so you dont need a convertor. I guess they went to a three phase stator and DC regulation for the CPU.

Yes, sorry havent checked this string in a while. I still make these to order. I think I have made a few dozen for the HCS guys in the past few seasons. I can build up to 4 amps, and prices vary for the power as I stock order just the 1 amp components and have to custom order the components for the higher current. I dont like to build more than 4 amp as that is 48watts you are pulling off your stator. Most applications that require more than 2 amps, you should probably have a battery to use as the main power draw and let the sled charge the battery as it needs to. I usually get the shipped within a couple of days from the order, depending on how busy it is with the parts side of my hobbies.
Thanks HCS for the post and think snow! Tired of this 80' weather. Where is the snow????

I would like to get one of these coverters from you for a NUVI 500. I am not sure of the wattage needed. It would be going in a 600 fusion. The smaller the unit the better. I use paypal as a prefered method of payment. Please pm me about getting this. Thanks

I don't think you need a converter. The Polaris have an extra power plug or two in the harness.
