Full Version: Increased insurance

Looks like the cost of insurance is going up this year. TD Meloche Monnex just sent me my renewal and notified me of two recent changes to my policy (and likely yours too).

1. Insurance on snowmobiles is now subject ot provincial sales tax. Automobiles still aren't.

2. Quote "The snowmobile insurance market has experienced higher than normal claims and unsatisfactory resuls in the Ontario market over the past few years. As a result of this situation we have found it necessary to increase premiums."

The end result for me is a 70% increase in cost dunno.gif Anyone else get dinged?

I really hope gas prices stay low into the winter!
Stoney
If I read your post correctly you are with TD insurance (formally Liberty)......I am cancelling all my insurance with them including my snowmobile insurance.

My rates with Liberty in the past have always either went down or stayed the same and the service was fine.....now in the past two or three years with TD the rates have gone up with all of my policies (home, auto, snowmobile) with NO claims and the people you deal with at TD seem to be idiots.....or atleast the ones I seem to deal with are!

Not sure is they have new personal for TD and all the Liberty personal are gone or they just now have a new set of RULES to follow!

Just my 2 cents.

How much is your renewal and for what type of machine?

You can't get a quote until you have your 06/07 trail pass permit number. I'll look into it after I buy my pass at the show.

As a note these OFSC sponsored insurance companies come and go, usually go. Some of them get out of it mid season so you could be holding the short end of a stick. Anyone remember MASS?, Aliance? some french company I can't remember the name of as well.

EDIT I dug a little deeper, they want an Automobile to insure aswell.

"To take advantage of Sledder's Choice insurance rates, all you need is a trail permit and to be an OFSC MemberPlus member. (In 2001 with Bill 101, snowmobile trail permits became mandatory on sleds using OFSC trails.) Also, you must have an automobile to insure."
Thinksno
Liberty was good to me, see how td is. I am worried reading this post cause I had a total loss claim on a new truck last December. My sled policy is due soon.

My policy is for an '02 MXZ800 but I expect this is applicable to all sleds. The last 2 years I had 2 800's insured with them without increase. I did get a large speeding ticket this year, 49 over and considered as a major offence to the insurance company but I recently got my truck policy renewal and it went down 20% :div20: There's no mention of my driving record in my sled policy renewal.

When I switched to TD I saved major $$$ on my automobiles so I just moved everything to them but I'm thinking TD isn't too interested in insuring sleds, just as they wouldn't even talk to me about a bike. Another thing I learned is that they don't like to do 'R' type machines, like a CRF450R. They did however insure my TRX450R.
vooodooo
TD too, my sled went up by over %60.
Forget about the ZX-10.
Spiderman
See, TD use your driving record for your vehicles as rating on sleds too. Some others do it as well, however some, like Pilot do not, they rate based on cc's and value of the sled, you're driving record while operating a vehicle is irrelevant. The Personal/Certas also use your vehilce driving record.

Most companies do have a black list of vehicles, including cars. I'm sticking with Pilot for now, they have both my vehicles and my house, plus my sled. I paid $360.00 with full on my 04 Pro X 600.

And the reason your truck hasn't gone up yet is because you're insurance company hasn't found out about your ticket. Your safe until at least the next renewal term, or unless you move somewhere else.

Any insurance company will pull an MVR ( licence record search ) on a new risk, once you're with them, depending on the underwriting practices, some check every renewal, others every three years, some only five years. You've gotten away with it for now, but eventually they will find out,
MUSKOKA800
Sounds like TD is pulling a typical fast one. :wut60:
Remember when MASS dropped out. Suddenly TD appeared with amazing rates and filled the void left by MASS for many who were left out in the cold. Now TD has realized what all the other higher cost ins. companies have claimed and jacked up their rates.
Oh well, TD users got a break for a couple years anyway. Perhaps RBC is the new cheapy, for now anyway.
blue_by_you
I debated switching over to TD last season, when I was quoted half of what I'm currently paying, but I didn't for fear of a huge increase after one yr... I've had good luck with my current insurance... 2 total loss claims and a speeding ticket in the 6 yrs I've been with them and not one increase... I pay $187/month for my 05 Ram 4x4, and 04 F7... full coverage.

Deisel 93
I just paid $1110.00 for 3 sleds - 06 800X, 05 550 fan, 04 800ho, all with full coverage through TD. No increase over last year.

Well I really shouldn't complain about the increase too much because my rates are still much lower than yours. Last year I paid $112 for full coverage on this '02 and this year it has increased to $190, which is still almost half your rate. Your sled is likely worth a bit more..... If the OFSC jacked their permit cost by $75 we'd all be unhappy even though it would still be a bargain for what we get.

About the truck, I don't doubt that an increase is coming. This isn't the first 49 over I've had (3 in total :frech32: ) since being with TD (6 years) and every year my rates continue to drop. They must fall into the 5 year check category. I was able to fight the first two tickets and get them dropped to 29 over (a minor offence) but not on this last one. Banged for the full 4 points and $353. I'd be stupid to switch knowing the next company will undoubtedly uncover my record and reflect that in my quote.
Spiderman
I'm fine with $360 for my sled, that doesn't bother me, considering the last year I had my 800, I paid close to a grand in the facility market with Royal & Sun. I got stuck because Pilot wouldn't write my 800 at the time, Royal facility was the only one who would take it on a stand alone, I had 3 speeding tickets in 9 months that year and couldn't move my autos because Pilot didn't know, but if I went on board with someone new, they would have discovered my tickets.

It's all $$$$, but less than 500 is fine for me.

TD is good for coverage if you have minimal or no claims. When the going gets tough they'll drop you like a ton of bricks... not to mention rape you with high premiums.

Stay where you are if you know what's good for you...

Just called TD/Melocche Monnex for a quote on my 2007 HOCFI 600 Polaris. It should be noted they were unable to quote on the 2007, but used a 2006 Fusion 600/ and the price I gave them that I paid for the new unit.

On a stand alone, ( no other policies with them ), $505.00, All perils, 300 ded, 1 mil liability.

If I give them my vehicles, $459.00. I was told they add 10% to any quote if they are on a stand alone basis.

Pilot, my current insurers, want $715.00 with all my policies for 1 mil liab, 500 Collision ded.....
ZR800EFI
Before moving your vehicles over, get a quote from them first...obviously.

I was renewing my vehicles last year through Economical and was in the process of insuring my snowmobile with TD. They said they'll save me another $50 off the snowmobile policy if I bring a vehicle over, and that their vehicle rates are quite competitive.

I had them quote my '93 Bonneville SSE, '94 YukonGT, and '02 Envoy SLT. For the three vehicles alone, identical coverage to Economical as I had their papers in front of me when TD gave me the quote over the phone, they were almost $1000 higher. The guy on the other end seemed quite surprised, so maybe there was a mistake somewhere...I dunno, but all I have with TD are my snowmobiles.

Pilot is an absolute rip off for sled insurance. They quoted me just around $1000 for the F7 with full coverage (ie: coll) and I already had 2 cars with them. Flush.gif  :banghead:

Needless to say I found other arrangements. $1000, are they out of their frickin' mind!?! dunno.gif

I'm with TD molox and I paid $235 all perils for 05 F7 SP, switching to CO/OP and rates on the sled stayed the same, but my car came way down!

I met a guy on Friday who said he pays $700 to insure his CBR 600, as a brand new bike rider, with State Farm?
I can't find a company who will insure me on my 1000, 20 yrs bike, liability only, spotless record, for less than $1400.
I fork over $5000+ to the co-operators for this and that, but they will not touch my bike.
Christ, I only pay $900 for my truck, full coverage.
Any other bike riders use State farm?
I'll switch all my stuff I am so pissed at the "co-operators"

I just got my renewal $380 all perils 300 deductible. 03 rev 800.

That's up 40 bucks over last year.

I have a Katana 1100 and pay $700 a year with Liability, fire and theft. I have no accidents and had a bike lisense for 25 years but since I haven't bought bike insurance for 10 years they said I am paying new rider rates. It should go down next year.

I'm insured with Kingsway General. The broker was Pioneer from Kitchener, their number is 519-744-4481 or 1-800-665-2073. Give them a call, they are bike friendly. The owner, Gord, is big into bikes himself.

Hope this helps.

When I was looking into getting a bike, I was told by my insurance company to get a quote from Canada Life. My insurance company said that Canada Life specialized in bikes. Canada Life's quote was half of what my insurance company wanted.

Might be worth looking into.

My bike,ATV and sled are all with RBC..for a few years now...not up for renewal till may so I won't know my rates till then..but I shopped around and they were the cheapest total price bar far. The ATV was cheaper at Primmum(TD) but sled and bike more money.

:beerchug: We have our house, car, truck and atv"s with Pilot. Pilot wanted $800 for our sleds and we called TD-Prinnum and put our sleds only with them for $355. The policy isn"t due yet on the sleds but from what everybody who went to TD is saying a hit is inevitable. DIRTY ROTTEN SCUM SUCKING HOGS! :banghead: :banghead:

Just called Believer Plus:

TD wants $310 this year - up from $260.
Believer wants $174 for the sled but you have to transfer your vehicle over as well.....if i go ahead with it, they will save me about $250 on my truck insurance......for a total of $386 savings.

My only concern is, if TD raised their rates one and two years after they gave everyone awesome ones, who's to say that believer wont do the same?

Also, the girl I spoke to said that she would give me the sled insurance as long as I gave her my truck policy on renewal (which will be June 07). What happens if i sell my truck or if I then find an even cheaper company, am I bound to Believer? Writing this, I think I have to call her back and get more details...lol....grinning-smiley-023.gif)

Update: Called the girl back that I spoke with to clarify what she told me (agreeing to their policy upon my renewal date for my truck). I said what happens if on my renewal, I do not go with your company, or someone else can give me a lower rate. She said that they would try their best to match my new quote or charge me a cancellation fee for my sled insurance. She said the charge would be something like $50 bucks or so……..now, it probably doesn’t make too much sense for me since my TD only went up $60 bucks and I wouldn’t see any actual savings until my renewal, but for someone who’s TD policy went up huge, you can almost agree to the term, take the sled savings and tell them to buzz off when your renewal for your vehicle comes along……not condoning it, but it could be possibility.
