I picked up a 78 El Tigre 5000 today. It isn't in to bad of shape but the recoil is broken. Can I just take the recoil off and wrap a rope around it to check the compression?
I am going to sell it for $100 or I would like to trade it for an original track for a 1976 El Tigre 5000.
I will post some pictures of it later today.

eddie that was a 500 free air.
The cdi you need is only $87 at Royal Distributing.

Vrod you sold that way too cheap. looked to be in great shape for restoration. I saw it earlier today , if you weren't so far away I would have bought it for the $100 right away.

How's your '76. That was the second Cat I owned and was a great sled other than those grouser bars always coming apart.

rosco,
I haven't picked up the 76 yet but it is in extremly nice shape besides the track ( bars). It is still together but it really needs a new one. I should have it by next weekend.
I know I sold it cheap but if I get one that I do not want and only make a few dollars, I am happy and hopefully it makes someone else happy. I just needed to sell it quick to get the room. I have the chance to buy 2- 78 Panteras in GREAT shape, 1 79 Jag 340 in GREAT shape, plus a 78 and 79 El Tigre 5000 in GREAT shape. I might keep the 78 and 79 El Tigres but I am not sure if I will buy the Panteras and Jag yet, unless someone might want them. Plus where I live people have took these older sleds to the salvage yard for years and I thought if I can help someone get a good deal, I would buy it.

That's cool. :div20:

If you like the old 'el tigres you really should find an '80 6000. They are extremely fast for a leaf spring sled. Went there from my '76 and then to my '99 ZRT(brand new). That '80 500 liquid would give the 800's from all makes fits on the ice just with some porting.

Cheap trick for fixing the problems with the cleated tracks on these sleds (70's Jag/Tiger) is a swap to a 78-81 6000 El-Tigre track. All it takes is the correct drivers and idlers for the rubber track and some time. Some guys say that in some of the chassis the drive axles are a bolt in swap. We've done this a couple times on Jags. Saves weight and gives free hp/speed. I'm going to build a mod 76 5000 and that will also be done to it.

You should also use the 6000 skid because they have 4 more idler wheels- you burn up the slides in a hurry without them on a rubber track.

Thanks for the advice again!! I appreciate it.
