I made a post on this site about two weeks ago stating that the bearings in the jackshaft are fu-bared..... Its a 01 ZL 600 EFI ESR. The speedo doesn't work. Thats what gave me a clue. I put a new pin in the speedo cable since the old one was sheered off and still speedo doens't work, so it must be the bearings. Anyway, will it do any damage if I drive it this way? Aslo can anybody give me a good dealer to go too in the Twin Cities. Thanks

You think the bearings are junk and you still want to ride it? :frech32:

hey ck the shaft and see if it moves at all if not the bearing might not be bad, also take the end out of the speedo and pull the cable they will break at the bent of the hood, mine did that 4 times even after i moved the location of the cable to make it less of a bend,so you might not need a bearing just a new cable ylsuper.gif :div20:

If you drive it that way it will break on the trail and you will have to put a sled under the track to pull it back home. Destroy about $300 in parts and if a dealer fixes it will be at least $1000 bill. :augen41: Like I said before its a $10 part $20 if you do both sides. If you can change the speedo key you can change a track suspension or any orther mechical thing on a sled. Dig into it anybody on these boards will help you out if you run into any problems. Get a service mannual if you have to. One more thing the clutch is on the jackshaft the speedo is on the drive shaft

The speedo quit working on my 95 ZR580EFI. Found out it was the drive axel bearing. Not cheep to fix!

Where do you live in town and maybe I can get you to a good shop that won't charge as much as a dealer, or maybe even stop by and show you and your buddies how to do it yourself.....always a better feeling doing it yourself :div20:

If you dont fix it I have seen them take out the bearing mount and lock up the track. Not a pretty sight at 50mph

ylsuper.gif The speedo breaking is your first sign of the stock arctic cat bearing on the jackshaft breaking. usually happens around 3000 miles. you must put in the blue sided sealed racing bearing!!!! i usually put one on even when sled is new, otherwise :banghead: uzi.gif :augen41: HUGH DAMAGE!!!!! i_need_snow.gif

You need to grease the bearings at least every 500mi and then the problem goes away. There is a zerk under the secondary clutch.

The bearings are "shielded" not sealed. They have a metal shield on them, not a rubber seal like the sealed ones.If you grease the sled you will notice grease pumping through the bearing and out into the tunnel. The same way the grease goes through the bearing is what allows water/snow to come in the opposite way.If you grease it after every ride...ie. 2,3,4 day weekend you will pump the moisture out and if you don't the moisture will eventually rust the bearings.I have almost 5000miles on an 01 T-Cat and I still have the original bearings.I pull the skid out every year and inspect all of the bearings.I bought a spare bearing for it ...needless to say it is still a spare.

Mainecat, not its not, i saw one last winter sease up at 92 mph on ice, when the track locked up the studs sunk in and broke the track into two peices...now he was s.o.l. going down the track...luckily somone got infront of them and let them hit them and then brought them to a stop...but i would change them and not ride them.

JUST censored.gif :banghead: USE THE SEALED -- NTN -- BLUE SEALED RACING BEARINGS AND YOU DON'T EVEN HALF TO WORRY ABOUT GREASING THE BEARING. ONLY A LILLE EVERY NOW AND THEN FOR THE SPEEDO CABLE! THE NTN WILL LAST 10,000 MILES AS APPOSSED TO 3500 FOR THE STOCK ONE! :frech32: ONCE YOU BLOW YOUR FIRST JACK SHAFT YOU'LL BE SEEIN WHAT I MEAN! cold.gif :banghead: :augen41: veryangry.gif :frech32:

dunno.gif a friend of mine told me he has changed the drive bearing, under the secondary , by using a bottle jack and spreading apart the tunnel. he said it is so much faster. i think thats a little dangerous to the sled. or was he just pulling my leg???

No, thats a great way to do it as long as it's not an Arctic Cat! :banghead: Holy censored.gif
It works especially good on ski-doos. frech11.gif

Well..I have the same problem with my 89 Cougar as Snowmaster..
But can't afford the cost for someone else to fix it.. so in reading this post you guys have encouraged me to just do it my self... but I do have a Question..
Where can I get the BLUE SEALED RACING BEARINGS like you said? and how do i know i am getting the right ones? Have not tried the pin yet ,but did disconnect the speedo cable and did spin it and it worked so it must be the pin.. so there for the bearing must be bad.. ? right?

m2c.gif Got my bearings through H.P. it was a FORMULA-AS205-1PK number on package was AS205-100 (24.5mm[1"]x52mmx27mm) That was for a 1999 ZL 600 BEFI LIMITED EDITION remember limiteds have diferent parts than a stock sled so just look up the number for your exact sled! :div20: i_need_snow.gif

trau14.gif "MURPHYS LAW" more than likely it's the bearing. If you are careful you can check the speedo and cable with variable speed drill then you'll know for sure. dunno.gif

its not a big job to do before winter sets in just take chain and gears out self explainitory on clutchside. just talk to a dealer and he will step you tru it.if I could do it any one can the hardest part is putting suspention back in

my bearing was making noise then all of sudden the shaft broke with me and my 10 mo old son on it, luckly we was going only 10 mph, no job, have welder, replaced end on shaft, new bearing and works good, one day ill get a new shaft ($95)so the spedo will work,
