I had a 98 700XC it had a hot seat clutch kit and was geared 18 over 41 for hard acceleration the sled would top out around 90. My brother however had a 98 XCR 440 and out of the hole we ran neck and neck to about 60 and then I would pull on him and we do weigh about the same. I suppose his 440 would do about 80 to 85 the way he had it set up. I do know that his 440 gears were left stock, but he did play with the clutching a lot.

I raced a 98 440 here in NH. For the size.... Very fast. Nice blend between light weight and power. Top end stock is around 90, play with the gearing and you have a giant killer (up to 70 or so) or get some top end out of it.

I currently own a 98 XCR 440! Love the sled. They are very quick sleds. I have made bigger cc sleds from the same eara left scratching their head. I run HSP clutching in it mixed w/ a ripsaw track. Stock gearing was 22/41 which was fine but I now run 20/39 or 21/41 "same ratio". I can still pull 90mph on the spedo with this gearing. I've raced new 500s and beat them in 660ft and even a couple 00 XC 440s and beat them. The only 500 I never got to race yet was a F5. Stock F5 I can't see it standing a chance from what I seen last year at the hillclimbs, but put some clutch work into one and it should be a good race. I have lots of info about them and clutch set-ups for them. pm me anytime. A guy over on snowmobilefanatics.com just picked up a 98 w/ only 72miles on it if you can believe that shit!! The metal clips on the track wern't even rusted. Good luck finding one.
