January 1996-I had a 1996 Polaris XLT SP stolen from my camp in Harrison, ME. It only had 400 miles on it at the time. A friend & myself had driven thru a blizzard to get to camp one Friday only to discover it had been stolen sometime during the week. A call to the local police resulted in a visit from the sheriff the next day. He took the report, but didn't seem to think anything would come of it. On the following Monday I started posting reward posters in stores, and the phone was ringing when I got back to camp. Guy said "I saw a machine fitting the description off the side of the road by me" He agreed to meet me & show me the location. Sure enough it's my sled that someone had tried to run into the swamp off of Songo Locks Rd. near Sebago lake. It had been run pretty hard (joy riding) then dumped. I gave the guy a hundred bucks & loaded it on my truck. As I'm tying it down a cop pulls up and says "I was wondering when someone was going to come for that thing" At this point I'm soaking from getting the thing out of a swamp & it's about 10 below so I was not in the best of moods. I shout back maybe you should have got out of you car & checked it out & you would have discovered this was reported stolen over the weekend. He says "I'll need to see some id then" I laughed and got in my truck & drove away. The sled was pretty much done with a bent tunnel among other things, so I traded it in for another. Thanks again to the gentleman who led me to it, and I still frequent the area trying to find out the culprit, or get a name from someone to get revenge.

I had one stolen up in Lewiston. It or what was left of it was found only 1/2 mile from my cabin. All that was left was the tunnel, snowflap and front frame. It was towed back in the woods and dropped. I stumbled across it one day.

A local Polaris dealer had a bunch of ATV's and sleds stolen along with one 80cc Motor cycle. A year or so later a kid in Florida 1000 miles away is going to race his new 80 cc at some kind of a race. You had to enter the VIN# on the entree form. The bike came up stolen. In the end the father showed the cops who he got it from. All of the stolen stuff was found!!!!! Funny how things work out....

i have actually gotten 2 of my sleds back that were stolen. the first sled i had stolen, the cut the chain off of it,threw in some plugs( cause i always take them out )and proceeded to steal it.Dumb asses took it on a fresh snow fall,so my dad took his sled and just followed the tracks to find my sled about 2 miles from my house covered with branches in the bush.they left it there cause it was almost empty of fuel.we called the cops and they put a stake out on it.the kids came back at about 6 pm with 5 gallons of fuel in tow.needless to day they were caught.good thing for not having much fuel in it. the punks were only 16 or 17 so they basicly got a slap on the hand.second time my sled got stolen from a buddies place when we stopped for lunch.like i said i usually take my plugs out but we were only stopping for a sandwich.the cops found the sled 2 months later in the middle off nowhere with a popped piston.i was very surprised the didn't strip or burn it.so chin up guys it is possible to get your sleds back. :div20:

I had my sled stolen in February of 2006 from behind my apartment block.
My friends and fellow sledding buddies went out on the prowl.
They found my sled 4 days later. Pipe still glowing red, with next to no damage. They towed it home and got her ready to ride again for me.
It's great to have good friends.

the poor cop would have had to get out of his car and walk all the way to the sled parked next to him ( 6 feet away)
his f**king donut would get cold and then have to do paperwork instead of driving around collecting your tax dollars
lazy a** holes . oh we have to work with this badge on??????

Here's one for you. A couple of years ago we stopped at the Hotel in Stoney Mountain and my buddy had his XLT stolen. By the time he got home there was a message from the police letting him know they had his machine and the guys that stole it. He had'nt even reported it stolen yet! He got it back the next day without a scratch on it. The dumb buggers stole it, drove it into the city and got reported for driving it up and down the road in front of there house.

early January 97 someone decided my 84 Yamaha SRV 540 fan was a sled worth stealing, so he put about 8 miles on it before burying it into a drift in my uncles field, so he just abandoned it there and we found it 2 days later :frech32: :frech32: :frech32:

after reading all these stories i am going to protect my sled better. we leave stuff all over, back of trucks not locked, keys in the ignition!!! never had a problem. maybe no one wants a beat to hell truck trailer and sleds. i keep trashing my stuff and maybe my good luck will prevail. had a indy 500 and a indy lite stolen with a trl from my dads farm when i was younger, pissed me off for 2 winters till i could afford my own sled to ride again.

I just copied and pasted this from another forum but I wrote it.
3:30 am, Dec 23, I was home from college at my dad's place and got up to use the bathroom. I looked out behind the back yard (where there is a logging road that runs across a field 1/8 of a mile and then back to the woods) and saw a couple people who looked like they were dragging something. So I thought "wtf!" and figured "did they jack a deer?", "are they hauling a christmas tree home?" or "are they breaking in somewhere and stealing stuff?". So I put clothes on to go outside and get a better look at them, finally figuring that they were breaking into the mill. So I got outside, looked in the front yard where I parked my 1972 Sno-jet SST 433 not even 6 feet from the doorway and it was gone! This is an original, unrestored machine that is almost showroom condition! I was pissed and then started looking at prints and tracks, then went in the house. So I'm rushing around looking for weaponry and my white tyvek suit..pretty much suiting up for warfare, then I figured that I better try the legal way first and dialled the RCMP. Whoever I saw from the bathroom, probably had my machine so right there and then they were maybe 1/4 mile back on the road.
So 1/2 hour later, 1 cop shows up and I tell him the complications of the situation.
So he said we had to wait for backup to come from another town! So that took another 1/2 hour so in the meantime, I'm standing there pretty much going nuts but trying to keep quiet. So finally, the other cop shows up and we start following the trail.
I was the only one who looked at prints and that could tell the difference between a new print and a 3 day old print. Holy f*ck, I just couldn't believe it. I had to lead the police and convince them where the fresh tracks were and to follow them. So about 10 minutes after bickering about where the tracks were headed, we followed one that led to a trail that goes back towards my dad's place. We followed that until it reached the neighbour's back yards and there sat the abandoned sled which seemed unabused so that was good. So we left the machine and continued to follow the tracks. They led up to this place that was 4 houses down from my dad's and there was snowmobile tracks leading up there too so whoever took it, did alot of dragging. We knock on the door of the house and discover that there are a couple "kids" in the basement, hanging out!!
We caught them!!
The kids (about 17-18 years old) owned up to taking the sled but then said that they "found it on the sidewalk in front of their neighbour's yard and that someone else had stolen it before they did"..which was complete bullshit because the same 2 foot prints were the only ones we saw. They finally owned up to doing everything and after the police got done doing their thing, I went back to get the sled home. It turns out that a connection in the wire harness came loose and the sled lost spark on 1 side so it it broke down on them! So I plugged the connections back in and drove the old sled home..at 5:30 am..almost 2 hours after I first saw the people from the bathroom.
So that tells you something about the response time!!!! If this was professionals, the sled would have been LONG GONE!
Then there was the fact that they couldn't tell the difference between a fresh print and something that was left a few days ago.
In the end, the kids came to me and apologized. Their parents were PISSED! I gave them a good speech and there is a mark on their records that won't affect them trying to get jobs but will show up if they commit an offence again. I don't want to rag the police but they are really short staffed and sometimes I wonder if they really have the will to seriously catch people doing sh*t like this. So the moral of the story.. If you see people taking your sh*t and you call the police, don't expect good response time.
This could have been alot worse! If I catch people stealing anything again, I am NOT picking up the phone.
This sled is 100% complete right down to the seat and in close to original showroom shape is not easy to find in a dealership anymore.

Heres one. Three kids that i went to highschool with thought that it was a good idea to steal three arcticcat sleds from a bar out by my town. Next day they are out riding around the same town were they had stolen them. THey were almost out of gas so they decided to go into town and fuel up well an off duty cop recoginized those where the stolen sleds and then tackled one kid off of the sled and all three got caught and charges pressed. Just goes to show how dumb people can be when steailing things
