Condolences to his family.

As morbid as it is, I was waiting to here of a death this weekend. Put the sled on the trailer earlier than I wanted saturday in Duluth. I was nearly hit no less than 3 times in 100 miles. The last 20 or so miles I was almost scared to go around the next corner. No more weekend trail ridding point, boondocking here I come!

Sorry to rant.

I had a similiar experience last year on the Gunflint G trail goins east in the morning when most people are coming up from the shore. I felt as though I was playing Russian Roulette. One after another coming at me in the middle of the corner.....

Sad news for sure.

There is no excuse for getting drunk and jumping on a sled and hopefully this will be a wakeup call for anyone that gets shitty and goes for a ride.

Lets not rush to judgement. Both parties could have been intoxicated and you dont know who was at fault in the crash. From what Im hearing there was a race....details are still sketchy at this point.

Was the guy wasted or just above the legal limit?

Danube resident being held on $100,000 bail

GRAND RAPIDS — A 24-year-old is being held on $100,000 cash bail in Itasca County Jail in connection with the snowmobile accident that claimed the life of Hibbing Realtor Jack Frahm on Saturday.

Phillip Benjamin Braun of Danube, Minn., is currently awaiting charges for his role in Frahm’s death. Anticipated charges include criminal vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated.

Frahm, a broker and appraiser, was owner of Frahm & Associates JF Realty in Hibbing. The 63-year-old resided in Side Lake.

According to Itasca County Sheriff Pat Medure, two snowmobiles collided while traveling on the Circle T Snowmobile Trail approximately one mile west of Togo off Highway 1. Frahm was driving one of the snowmobiles; Braun was the driver of the other snowmobile.

Frahm was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Medure. He said that speed and alcohol were factors in the incident.

“The preliminary test (blood alcohol content) taken at the scene put him (Braun) at over the legal limit,” said Medure.

Formal tests for BAC will be sent to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The legal limit is. 08. Charges could include second degree DWI, which is a felony.

(A second degree DWI is charged if there are two aggravating factor. Aggravating factors may include:

A prior impaired driving incident within a 10 year period (this includes DWI license revocations or DWI convictions);
Blood Alcohol Content is more than two times the legal limit (.20); )

Speed limit on snowmobile trails is 50 mph.

Braun was treated for shoulder and facial injuries and released from the Bigfork Valley Hospital in Bigfork. He was then taken into custody.

As of press time, formal charges by the Itasca County Attorney John “Jack” Muhar’s office were pending. Criminal vehicular homicide is also a felony.

The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Frahm was transported by ambulance to the Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Bearville First responders and the Cook and Nashwauk ambulance services.

Medure said investigators spent a great deal of time Monday reconstructing the accident. He verified that Braun was traveling with three others on the trail at the time of the accident, while Frahm was snowmobiling alone.

He also said that he was not aware of other snowmobiling accidents occurring at that point on the trail, adding that it’s up to snowmobilers to report such incidents.

Not just a news story, Jack Frahm -

I wonder if it happened where the Circle T intersects with the Togo spur? It's pretty straight there with good visibility.

Update-

A Danube, Minn., man with a record of driving while intoxicated has been charged with three counts of Criminal Vehicular Homicide and two counts of DWI in connection with a fatal snowmobile crash near Togo Saturday.
The Itasca County Attorney's office filed a criminal complaint today against Phillip Benjamin Braun, 24. He faces maximum penalties of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine for vehicular homicide and one year in prison and a $3,000 fine for DWI.

He also was charged with one count of speeding.

Braun collided with a snowmobile driven by Jack Edward Frahm, 63, of Side Lake, on the Circle T snowmobile trail near Togo at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Frahm was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the complaint, a deputy who responded to the scene smelled alcohol on Braun's breath. A preliminary breathalyzer test indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.204 percent, more than 2 times the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle in Minnesota. Results of a more accurate blood test are pending.
Braun had DWI convictions in October 2003 and October 2004.

Braun was arrested, treated for injuries at Bigfork Valley Hospital in Bigfork, and released into the custody of the Itasca County Sheriff's Department. He is being held on $100,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 20.

A second snowmobiler in Braun's party was also arrested for DWI. A portable breathalyzer test on that man indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.186 percent. Like Braun, the man has two prior DWI convictions. Results of a more accurate blood test are pending for him as well.

hopefully right with off the trail for good. anyone convicted of a DWI or careless on a snowmobile should be restricted from riding a sled for a set period of time.
