Anybody know if it okay to mount the rear shock opposite of the way its suppoose to be to get the shock shaft away from the bottom area of the track.
Thought it would keep the shaft from getting nicks in it and ruin the seal.

If its a Fox they will work either way. They might of flipped to save unsprug weight. Most shocks are mounted shaft up.

The shaft is suppoesed to be mouted up and boot over it anyway. Someone has flipped yours. Take a look at partsland.com

Partsland, as well as all other fiches, show the REAR torque arm shock with the shaft end DOWN.
I do know that the mount bushings that go in each end of the shock are about 1/16" different in length.
To prove the diagrams are correct, just about every Xtra-12 rearend I've seen has had the rear shock with the shaft down.
I think because the overall width of the shaft eyelet end and shock body eyelet end are so close that sometimes they get re-assmbled upside-down.
I just want to know if its OK to invert it, shaft end up?

Shaft end is up on both of our Xtra-12 suspensions.

My 96 XLT Spec. has had the body down/shaft up from day one. Just had shocks recharged and reinstalled same as they came off. :div20:

Just to clarify, the rear torque arm shock?
If so, cool and many thanks. :beerchug:

Yeah, figured you just overlooked that. :div20:
Ever see one mounted the other way? dunno.gif

You can usually flip a shock upside down, the reason to do it is to reduce unsprung weight. with the weight of a skid and track I see little reason to flip one over. I would put it shaft side up and replace the boot.

Just for the record, the 96 Xtra-12 sleds show the shock shaft end up and with a shield.
I'm guessing after the 95's they decided to change it around.

That explains alot then, end of conspiracy. :cn:

should also answer that you won't have a clearance issue either way

Well..........actually it wouldn't work afterall.

There's not enough clearance for the eyelet, on the body end of the shock, to fit into the mount tab of the rear pivot arm.
You'd have to remove material from the eyelet for it to fit and pivot freely.
I looked at the partsfiche again and noticed the original rear pivot arm (PN 1540891-067) is superceded to 1540971-067. Maybe the tabs on the superceded one are a little longer so that the shock can be mounted shaft end up.
Not earthshaking info but just putting an end to the mystery, again. :sleep3:
