hey transman I see you don't get out much, you speak like Que. is on another planet. For your info que. is one of the best snowmobile dest. in the world and have the warmest friendliest people on top of it. yes some people have been robbed but I'm sure if you park in a seedy area in your town you could get robbed also. so stop preaching about what you know shit about and if you wanna stay home stay , but don't ruin other peoples chance to ride 20,000 miles of groomed trails by saying Que. is an evil place.

Really thats funny i'm not tring to start an argument but just in my area alone 3 guys lost trailers ans sleds in qubec The guy asked for an opinion and i gave him one he can take it as he does. I can probally dig out some newspapers articles as well if i ask my buddies. It is true that sleds get robbed everywhere but sorry guys you got a bad rep. for missing sleds and trailers I was in tug hill last week and people were talking about how bad it was there sorry

Oh and if you didn't have that rap why did he ask how to disable his truck and sleds ??

Thanks guys! I should have just read previous posts for info as there's tons of stuff on these topics already............just looking for the best location for riding that would also be closest to the VT border and also the right place to buy the trail pass which I know that I need to get in advance. Would like to catcha local riding event or race if I'm near one too!!!
I lock my shit up tight and try to make it a little tougher to get than the next guys - I do this anywhere I go and even more so when I'm far away from home and out of the country...................

http://www.fcmq.qc.ca/english/pages.asp?id=59$50 for a one day pass, $140 for a 7 day pass.
I have just returned from my first trip snowmoin in QC. We trailered 880 miles to Chicoutimi in the Lac St Jean region. We had no security issues but we used cables chains and locks to make our rigs and sleds less desireable to thieves. We also stayed in a hotel which had a tent type garage with locked doors in which we kept our sleds overnight. Don't bring much cash and use the ATMs there to get Canadian money, that is the best way to get the best exchange rate.
Treatment we, as Americans, received from the French Canadians spanned the spectrum completely from very hospitable to downright rude. Not a reason to not go. We went to the library and got a french translation book for travelers but didn't use it much after the second day, I'll still bring the book next time. Most young people there speak English and many of them will want to speak to you to practice. Most older people seem to know more English than they let you know. There must not be the same kind of employee discrimination laws in QC because every bar we went into the bartender was hotter than the last.
When we go back I plan on driving fewer miles to somewhere south like St. Raymond then making a saddlebag loop up, around Lac St. Jean, and back down, could be done in 3 - 5 days riding, depending on how fast you want to ride. The trails are great and the signage is better than any I've seen in PA, NY or ME. Have a great trip! Bon Voyage!

We go to ST Zenon about 2hours north of Montreal.I've heard tons of bad stories about the Canadians and there light fingered ways.I've never had a problem. At night our sleds sat out in front of the house and never lost one. When we stay at a motel we always first check their security, and once again no problems. The place s we stay take good care. These people want us and our money to come back, so they put a good effort towards careing for you.You can't beat the quality of the Canadain snow, trails are great. Not a very good rate exchange now but you'll have a good time. Good luck! :celebrating:

Do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable so that you can relax and enjoy the trails. Case in point: last year I woke up late and took off with the guys for an overnight trip to LaTugue. Based on your expressed level of comfort I left the cabin and my vehicle unsecured. Did I worry about it? No, because the guys that I were with had assured me that we were staying at a safe place.
For several years we kept the family farm going by growing Christmas trees. One winter a young couple from NYC pulled up to our choose and cut field. As the cute looking girl got out of the vehicle her boyfriend locked her purse in the trunk of the car. At the time I thought it very odd as they were our only customer. In retrospect they were acting within their comfort zone. Conversely, I feel very comfortable in a big city such as New York or Philadelphia during the day but once the sun goes down and the artificial lights go on I am very selective where I venture.
If you are concerned about theft checkout Real Masse. They have a secured area for the vehicles and also a corral for the sleds. If you don't feel safe there then you may need to seek the professional opinion of your family doctor once you return home.

thats very true about real masse's...if he catches a thief, well i pity the thief..seen it happen 2 or 3 years ago
i have been going to real's since 96..the annual trip..this year started in chicoutimi on the 23 til 28
stopped and sledded at real's til jan 31, great place....they make you feel like family and 24 hour security at the parking lot and they can see the trail from there hut...there is no place safer in the area

We go to St. Donat all the time. We love the people up there. We have never had a problem. We Cable lock the sleds at night and put a piece of paper over the vin mumber. Great trails have fun.

I am curious? Why a piece of paper over the VIN? I believe i read another posting recently that stated a similiar tactic.

Theifs can have keys made at any dealer in minutes ----- In addition to covering your Vin # -- You should pull fuel relay fuses or soething else to further disable vehicle--(Make your vehicle less available than the next)----I drove 2 guys home 2 weeks ago that failed in these precautions.

considering taking a trip to st donat over president's day week. any recommendations on lodging, trails, etc.? will have the family so the more scenic trails the better. also may need one rental sled.

Damn - what an offer!
Thanks a lot - at this point here's what me and one friend are thinking. He's the same guy who will NOT go to Quebec (too far, too expensive, too much theft) so looking atthe recent weather we made a shorter trip plan. NY - Old Forge or Tug Hill is getting lots of snow this week and we're pretty sure the 4 hour trip and $45.00 NY registration is more our speed at this late point in the season. I know it will be crowded up there but we hope Friday and Monday would make up for the weekend...........
I'll talk to you soon and be watching the weather tomorrow and Thursday very carefully.
Thanks again, Tim

OK thanks.
So Where's the best night life around Lac St. Jean? We are thinking of leaving St Raymond and doing a loop, mabey spending 1 or 2 nights around Lac St Jean. I heard it's a pretty cool area and we're up for anything.
