Statement from Tom Kroeplin, Warden for the Wisconsin DNR:
"The DNR does have a reduction team in place for Northern Wisconsin. We are currently concentrating in Northern Wisconsin because we are the only place with snow. This team travels around the northwoods in marked snowmobiles, trucks and trailers. The DNR is not out to get you – we are simply trying to reduce fatality rates and accidents in the area. In my opinion these reduction teams have been working. In fact the majority of people are happy to see us here. We just want to keep everyone safe on the trails.
In the rumor mill there has been much discussion of the DNR marking snowmobile headlights with a black line and then pull the snowmobile over when they notice them down the trail. This rumor also states we are concentrating on snowmobiles in town and perhaps at local drinking establishments. This rumor is not true – we would have no reason for doing that. In order for the DNR to pull over a snowmobiler we must have probable cause and know that a violation has taken place.
One more thing I want to remind everyone of is the 25 mph speed limit in the area west of the Hwy 51 bridge on Lake Minocqua. This area is what we call the Aqua Bowl, mainly it is the area west of the bridge, over towards the Beacons of Minocqua and up to the trestle bridge by The Thirsty Whale. The speed limit has been in effect since 1999 and it is posted on the bridges. Remember we have the speed limit due to the number of fatalities and accidents that have happened in this area. We are just trying to keep everyone safe.”
