interesting...........I don't know why they are against it. Nobody would ever see the towers, and it would supply tremendous amounts of electricity.

A trail over the top would be great. I don't know why there is so many people against this. I hope the current owner will open up the road for a day again this year. Always a great trip up to the top.
PS Daytripper you picked good year to not ride. Haven't been to the NEK yet.

how do you figure no one would see the towers?
Ever ridden to Matane, Quebec?

The towers would be visible to anyone to the east. The (tons?) of power would only benifit East Haven and Lyndon Electric. Good deal for them and the developer only. Eye sore to the rest of us. Any way, where has the developer been during the past open houses on the mountain? Or wasn't there a poster explaining the project to visiting snowmobilers on the mountain during the hope house?

Thats part of the problem, once the door has been opened they will show up everywhere. Why arent they at least painted green to blend into background better?
Just build another nuke plant  Just kidding...

That's another part of the problem. Folks whom live outside the affected area seem to support wind towers. There are quite a few locals that don't want the towers for many reasons. We can see the radar site most of the time. I'm not interested in looking at the towers.

How about the wind generators in Murdochville on the Gaspe. They must have 300 foot rotors on them. They were transported there all the way from California. I've never seen the ones in Matane as we usually skip that area, I imagine thay are the same. Personally I don't see them as an eyesore, I think they are awesome but that is just my opinion.

my thoughts exactly i think they are pretty cool looking. but beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess. anyways i wouldnt mind one in my back yard. Dont think anyone wants to put one in boston tho :drunk:
OK, my point wasn't to get everyone riled up. My experience has been that its difficult to see the radar site now, and even when you do it usually from a distance (I have never made it to the open house).
Also, the past information that I have ridden claimed that they would generate power for most of the NEK, not just a few areas, I'm guessing that the plans have changed many times.
I am not from the NEK, so I definately have a different view, but even if I lived there, I don't know that I would have a problem with them.
The whole thing intrigues me and it certainly seems that that site is the perfect spot for a wind tower.
Anyhow......

My guess is if they do move forward with the towers there will be too much equiptment and liability to allow access to us snowmobilers. I think the vandalism track record would speak for itself. It would be a shame, I have made a couple open houses and it is a great view from the top.
Has anyone heard about the open house this year, didnt notice it in VAST?

I have a camp that is 20miles away and very easy to see the radar base. The last thing I want to look at while I'm at my Vermont wilderness camp is wind towers. They are trying to put 13 towers on the other side of the valley just west of the East Haven base. All would be visible from Burke Mt.
Also, read the facts, the proposed 4 towers at East Haven only make enough energy to feed maybe 5k homes on a normal windy day. There is no way to store the power, so we still have to have a power source that can supply power on the off times(when wind isn't blowing) anyways.
Plus, as a Vermonter, it really ticks me off that this Boston, MA company comes in here and wants to scatter these things all over our rigelines. You can't tell me there isn't a steady wind coming off that ocean 24/7. However, you don't see them putting even 1 tower in Boston. Not even on their own building. Reason being, the people in Boston are too educated and have too much money to fight them. So, they come to small VT town and try and feed the uneducated small town folk with stories of "tax money". It might mean a new town truck but that's about it.
I will finish by saying that I do feel as though if there is any place to put a Wind farm project, East Haven is a good place. The roads and building sites are all existing and have already been developed in the past.

For some insight go check out the NY boards (not just HCS). A lot of discussion going on about the wind mills in Tug Hill Region of NY, how they affect the locals and the snowmobiles.

wow you sure summed it up . In mass they were going to put like 12 up off shore just outside of cape cod, guess what happened, the kennedys got involved good ole politics, they did'nt want to lose there view of the ocean. I just bought a camp myself and the last thing i want in my backyard is a wind mill.(i like it real quiet) who's going to buy land anywhere around those things?what about the ridgeline? This MA.company by the way is giving measly chump change to these town, c'mon now, maybe if were talking millions here. But get real the only ones who gonna make all the cash is the folks sittin in MA. lastly there no doubt we'll lose snowmobile trails because of this not gain anything, well just my opinion from the outside lookin in. :beerchug:

Sure let's build more coal and nuclear plants so it won't affect the scenic views.
If the state of Vt. and closed minded people would let me erect wind mills on my land to help pay my taxes ,HELL YES, PUT 'EM RIGHT NEXT TO TO CELL TOWER.

There is a wind tower located in Boston. It is on Rt. 93 as you are leaving the Big Dig just by the IBEW office.
Rubin bought the land to put wind towers on. He has been straight up about his project. Let him put the 4 wind turbines on HIS land to see if they will pan out.
Don't play the ridgeline game- the rusted radar towers have been an eyesore for 40 years.

Thank you Mike. Matt Rubin has for years been buying and renovating old, out of use hydro-electric dams and putting them back on the grid. Seems he is now looking for new sources for power. Like some others I don't have a problem with the looks, heck I even like cell towers, especially if they are owned by my provider. It's time to get real folks, it's Seabrook II or something else.

I agree 100%. No one wants to look at those things on the peaks of our favorite places. But its about comprimise. If you like to flip a switch, and see things in your house start working, its time to make a sacrifice. What would you rather have - a bad view, or 3 eye balls and athsma?

Just recieved an email from:
Dave Rapaport
East Haven Windfarm

Thanks for spreading the word on the East Mountain open house and for
passing along some of the responses you received. I would be happy to
address the issues raised:
Our company bought the radar base at the summit along with the
cantonment area, or base camp, lower down on the mountain in 2001 for
the purposes of developing the wind project we have proposed. Because of
various hazards posed by the decaying condition of the base, we only
open the summit up to the public once a year for the snowmobile open
house. It has been determined that many of the old buildings have
asbestos-containing materials, and the Vermont Department of Heath has
asked us to keep people out of them. Unfortunately, this means that
visitors will not be allowed to go up to the roof of the tallest
building to take in the view. However, there is an impressive view,
especially to the east, from the ground.
We have nothing to do with the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser, other than
paying to advertise it. It is put on by students at the East Haven River
School and volunteers for the community. They collect the money and as
far as we know, all of the proceeds go toward the stated purpose.

There is no way that wind towers on Vermont ridges or in New England ocean coastal bays will have a positive impact on the reduction of the average utility bill. However, should the citizens/voters in a community "elect" in favor of wind towers, it is their decision. Obviously, reducing local property taxes is a deciding issue.
A "hell of a topic" for snowmobile forum. With no snow, we can discuss anything/anybody. Man this winter #####.

Guess I should have looked at the webcams/forecast first - doesn't look good in town. Forecast for 5 degrees and 20 mph winds - maybe not worth trip . . .
