I live in Northern Indiana but keep my sleds in northern lower Mi. Dec. through the first of April. Rent a house up there for the last 5 years and never ride in Indiana. Have been running Indiana registrations for ever. Anyone live in In. and run Michigan registrations. Every year when I fill out my tax papers the question is asked where the sleds are located on Mar. 1st. I give my home address and pay the tax. and 3 year Ind. registration when due Just wonder if I can registure the sleds in Michigan.

Thanks
RD

I believe you can...call the closest Michigan Seceratary of State and ask them.
lakeeffectsledhead
You can register them in Michigan. But, if you live in Indiana, and ride in Indiana, you must also register them in Indiana. Since it sounds like you never ride them in Indiana I would just register them in Michigan and leave them up there.

I registerd mine in Coldwater at the license branch it was easyand I live in Indiana. I never registered it in Indiana even though I bought in Indiana.

indiana does not require them to be registered to ride in indiana
so if the sled is registered in michigan or wisconsin thats all you need for indiana
rdsmith
thanks

that is always the Question.

Just be prepared to pay a heavy fine if you're pulled over by the DNR and they check your license and registration.

Wrong...Not sure where you got your info from, but that kind of advice needs to be investigated before given out. It's true that you don't have to register the sled in Indiana, unless you plan on riding in Indiana. If you live AND ride in Indiana you have to register your sled there. Since rdsmith says he nevers rides in Indiana he doesn't need to register them there.

Pay heed to this man's advice...

I just want to make sure everyone is properly informed.

From the Indiana Code:

IC 14-16-1-8
Registration; requirement; exemptions
Sec. 8. (a) Except as otherwise provided, the following may not be operated on public property unless registered:
(1) An off-road vehicle.
(2) A snowmobile.
(b) Except as provided under subsection ©, a vehicle that is purchased after December 31, 2003, must be registered under this chapter.
© Registration is not required for the following vehicles:
(1) A vehicle that is exclusively operated in a special event of limited duration that is conducted according to a prearranged schedule under a permit from the governmental unit having jurisdiction.
(2) A vehicle being operated by a nonresident of Indiana as authorized under section 19 of this chapter.
(3) A vehicle being operated for purposes of testing or demonstration with temporary placement of numbers as set forth in section 16 of this chapter.
(4) A vehicle the operator of which has in the operator's possession a bill of sale from a dealer or private individual that includes the following:
(A) The purchaser's name and address.
(B) A date of purchase that is not more than thirty-one (31) days preceding the date that the operator is required to show the bill of sale.
© The make, model, and vehicle number of the vehicle provided by the manufacturer as required by section 13 of this chapter.
As added by P.L.1-1995, SEC.9. Amended by P.L.186-2003, SEC.41; P.L.225-2005, SEC.12.

Section 19:

IC 14-16-1-19
Vehicles registered in foreign nation or state
Sec. 19. A vehicle registered in another state or country to a nonresident of Indiana may be operated within Indiana under authority of the registration for a period not to exceed twenty (20) days in one (1) year.

Damn. didn't, ask for a legal disertation on Indiana law. But it sounds like you are concerned.

Just registured all 3 sleds in In. Early Dec. 05 for the next three years. I just don,t know why I should Pay Property tax on sleds when they are not in IN. Why does IN not except other states reg. mabye Indiana should do a trail permit. Oh yea. no snow, who would buy one. Love all of you that work your ass off for the sport!!!!! And I do support many Clubs. Time and money. Have regestured all sleds and paid taxes for many years. Own a property 2 Mi. from the Mi line. I wish I could ride there every weekend. Not happening. Thats why the sleds stay up north. And I get questions from Michigan DNR about Indiana Reg. when they see me over and over in the same places where we rent. Just trying to do the right thing. But feeling like I am getting screwed, and verry heavlly screutinized by some.

Thanks for your input,
RD

I didn't mean to give so much info, I just don't like to see bad information passed on the internet and a little of my "day job" tendencies come out now and then (I have to review certain state laws from time to time and like to have my facts straight before giving advice grinning-smiley-023.gif ).

The way things are going, I may be leaving my sleds up in Wolverine from now on. Tired of no snow here too!

Again, to all who replied, I'm only trying to help.

Maybe Rob can post links to all state laws concerning snowmobiling. Would only help the sport.

I really like seeing the DNR patrolling the trails. I really hate seeing the DNR writing tickets.

Peace.

Here is kind of the same problem I have let me know what you think! I bought 2 sleds last year from IN both are reg untill 07, I live in Kentucky , I am going to MI to ride, Should I regegister as a MI sled Or just buy the trail permit? If I were to get pulled over what do the DNR ask? Would they know I was not the original register?

If you were pulled over, I would assume they could run the registration numbers. After they look at your license, they might think they're stolen. If you bought them from a private party, hopefully he gave you a receipt. I would hold onto that receipt just in case.

rd, i live in ft wayne and own a place in the up. i had the same problem with property taxes so i re-registered in mi so i don't have to pay the tax. it peeved me off to pay taxes on sleds that have never seen indiana. it saves on tax and registration. you do have to have sleds registered in mi, no matter where your from. mi requires not only trail permits but registration (in any state).

Sleds are always registured in my name in IN. Like I said just re-uped all three sleds for the next three years. Re: the Tax Isue, sleds never see Indiana snow. Are never in Indiana on March 1st because they are kept at our rental place near Traverse City Dec. through April 1st. Tax form states (as I recall) where were the sleds on March 1st of the previous year.
Ridding in the same Mi. areas over a 5 years I have never been asked for my paperwork.
DNR most times will always look for registration stickers, trail permit, and wave you past.
A few times someone in the group would have somthing out of the ordinary and the hhole group will stop. You see the same DNR officers and I have been asked in a friendly way why we have In reg. when I am always up here. Even pulled ond DNR out of a stuck when he missed a corner. Talked to him the folling year on the trail. Think this year I will just tell the truth on the Indiana tax form and say No Sleds in Indiana on March 1st and see what they say. I have a friend that lives in Chicago, owns a place on Lake James in Northern Indiana. he has never had a problem with IL. reg. and ridding in Indiana. Someone said you need Ind. reg. to ride in IN.

its easy...the indiana registration is the same for your fishing boat...its for taxes for toys you own, not for the trails your gonna ride...we don't require trail stickers....they don't give a shit where ya take em too for use....the registration goes for PART of the trail system, the other goes to TAXES. so even if your doin the MICH thing your still gonna have to pay the tax....shit i still pay on several 1980 JOHN DEERES....because i own em....doesn't mean i use em or have to use em. sounds to me like your getting confused and pissed about payin the tax. for that to happen, your place of RESIDENCE has to be somewhere other than INDIANA, then you won't have to pay the taxes on the things you own in indiana...otherwise you gotta pay indiana registration and michigan trail passes...i don't understand why you don't go indiana dnr and read the sled laws...just ask a lawyer in your area....one question is usually free.

i live in LAKE COUNTY...so...i gotta do the property tax thing on EVERYTHING I OWN...also gotta have all cars pass emission test...they only way to get around some of the shit is to have another residence....but it must be your MAIN....so i bought a house down south in another county that does not have these laws...got boats, jet skis, atvs, trailers, sleds, canoes...its just a pain in the ass to register in another state...so if ya can do it all in indiana...its just easier in the long run...you can try it....but done that and been there...otherwise don't do anything in indiana, do it all in michigan....but splitting the 2 is hard to do...your gonna get pulled over all the time, checked, hassled, have to explain....etc....FORGETABOUTIT!
