Well I too have been riding in the area now since 1988, I'm usually there every single weekend.
I'm on the tail end of Lake Vernon, and to be honest, the last couple of years the Du Ya Wanna trails have been the best kept trails, far better than Tall Pines. Tall Pines are nice trails to ride but they have way too much traffic and get the shit kicked out of them by noon every saturday.
As for snow conditions, you can ask anyone, it's very commonly known Huntsville gets more snow than Dorset, always. When lake effect comes through, the 45K difference, not 20 as you think, makes a huge difference as to who gets it and who doesn't.
I don't know where you're located, by I have a number of friends who are in Dorset, 2 cottages in Rabbit Bay, right outside the channel, and one 20 cottages beyond the channel and they will agree with what I am saying.
No doubt, Huntsville is not a sledder friendly town, but why would you stay in town with sleds????, From, say the Highway Motel, you can any direction you like, from where I am, 20 miles to the Seguin, then the sky is the limit.
I'm not saying its the best place in the world, but in my opinion, the area is the best kept secret.

So it sounds like you are in the ideal location to have trail access from Huntsville while not needing good lakes. I do not argue that the Du Ya Wanna club trails have been good - but you still only really have one direction you can head out of your location - north/west. You cannot easily go south from Huntsville. You also cannot easily go east or north east - unless you can run the lake over to the Deerhurst trail. Also, it is very likely you will have to return back the same way you left.
If you read my post you will see I recommend he launch from Baysville NOT Dorset. These are 2 totally seperate locations. Trails north from Baysville are groomed by Hill & Gully Riders out of Port Sydney and are always fantastic. Trails south of Baysville are groomed by Happy Wanderers and were fantastic 2 weekends ago and many are on wide loggin roads and stand up extremely well in poor conditions. You do not touch a Tall Pines trail until you get all the way east to Raven Lake at Hwy #35.
Yes - Baysville is only 20 km from Huntsville on Brunel Road (Muskoka Rd #2). See attached!
I am located about 5 km north of Baysville directly off of Brunel Road - I have been since 1981. It gives you fantastic options for day loops in all four directions.
Good food can be found at the old "Birch Haven Resort" restuarant - called Windego (sp). The resort has been renamed - the "Landscapes of Lake of Bays".
