What are the conditions up in Huntsville? OFSC says that the trails are open. Do you think it would be worth the drive up for this weekend? I have never been sledding up there, could someone please tell me where the parking area is???

Thanks for the help :beerchug:

Let's see now...................it's gonna rain, well then it's gonna snow a little but wait then it's gonna rain again.

This past weekend I rode from Kearney to Grand Valley ski resort in Huntsville. Trails were decent. With all the freezing rain there is a good solid base. Watch out for the occasional rock or washout. Most washouts are now frozen, they just need snow to help fill them in.

more snow than northbay there i heard dunno.gif

Heard on Toronto TV weather this morning 5-10cm today and another 5-10cm overnight in Muskokas - as far as I know this should include Huntsville area - hope Dorset to Kearny - just not sure if the East side of Lake of Bays will be same as West side - I hope so.

Weather network online this morning is calling for only 1-3cm today and again tonight, so who do you trust?? - as I have read another poster don't believe anything until you see it on the ground.

But my faith is more on the Huntsville area rather than Haliburton for a weekend ride - I am planning for Sunday with 1 other rider - would love to meet up with some others who know the area.

Also - Haliburton Forest often has openings on Sundays - anyone have an update on that area??

I don't know who to trust anymore. I might just load up, and go up and see what I find on Saturday.

I do not think the conditions will be great - but they should be ridable.

Personally - I would consider driving to Baysville (On Hwy #117, east of #11, on the way to Dorset). You should be able to park at the Sunoco station. The trail goes directly out of their parking lot.

From there you can head north towards Port Sydney and Huntsville or South towards Minden and east towards Dorset and Dwight. I rode these trails on the weekend of the 7th and they were fantastic - considering the season.

I'm going again this weekend. Probably picking up my buddy and his XCR on the way. Maybe we will head down towards Dorset on Saturday.

Personally i'd try and ride around Huntsville before Dorset and Baysville, Huntsville always has more snow than those two places, and less traffic. Dorset, for obvious reasons is a great place to hang out if the trails are shit though, glug glug......

Spiderman:

What trails do you ride around Huntsville???

Personally - if find Huntsville to be the most unfriendly town to snowmobilers in all of Muskoka. Not to mention that most town access requires the lakes to be in good condition.

From Baysville you can be at Deerhurst in about 35 mins of riding. This gives you clear route north towards Kearney, or you can head overr to Port Sydney and north/west towards Sprucedale, Magnetawan and even Parry Sound via the Seguin. You also have the option of going east towards Dorset.

I cannot see how Hunstville can always have more snow than Baysville - they are about 20km apart - unless you plan on running around Huntsville in circles. I have been going to this area every weekend for 20 years and stand by my comment that Huntsville is a terrible spot for sledders.

Have they even re-opened the trail from Port Sydney north into Huntsville - went into Rock Ridge Park?? When you are in Huntsville you really only have one way to go - north/west. Or, you can head north out of Deerhurst - which I mentioned is just a short ride from Baysville.

Phaneom:

If you cannot park at the Sunoco station then you can park by the tennis court. Take Hwy #117 east over the bridge (at the end of Lake of Bays). Then turn left at the first street. You will see the trail immediately on your right. Follow the road as if curves around to the right and then turn right into the little sidestreet. You will come into area that is the old road and has a tennis court there. There is parking at this location also. It is about 1 km from the gas station.

Well I too have been riding in the area now since 1988, I'm usually there every single weekend.

I'm on the tail end of Lake Vernon, and to be honest, the last couple of years the Du Ya Wanna trails have been the best kept trails, far better than Tall Pines. Tall Pines are nice trails to ride but they have way too much traffic and get the shit kicked out of them by noon every saturday.

As for snow conditions, you can ask anyone, it's very commonly known Huntsville gets more snow than Dorset, always. When lake effect comes through, the 45K difference, not 20 as you think, makes a huge difference as to who gets it and who doesn't.

I don't know where you're located, by I have a number of friends who are in Dorset, 2 cottages in Rabbit Bay, right outside the channel, and one 20 cottages beyond the channel and they will agree with what I am saying.

No doubt, Huntsville is not a sledder friendly town, but why would you stay in town with sleds????, From, say the Highway Motel, you can any direction you like, from where I am, 20 miles to the Seguin, then the sky is the limit.

I'm not saying its the best place in the world, but in my opinion, the area is the best kept secret.

Spiderman:

So it sounds like you are in the ideal location to have trail access from Huntsville while not needing good lakes. I do not argue that the Du Ya Wanna club trails have been good - but you still only really have one direction you can head out of your location - north/west. You cannot easily go south from Huntsville. You also cannot easily go east or north east - unless you can run the lake over to the Deerhurst trail. Also, it is very likely you will have to return back the same way you left.

If you read my post you will see I recommend he launch from Baysville NOT Dorset. These are 2 totally seperate locations. Trails north from Baysville are groomed by Hill & Gully Riders out of Port Sydney and are always fantastic. Trails south of Baysville are groomed by Happy Wanderers and were fantastic 2 weekends ago and many are on wide loggin roads and stand up extremely well in poor conditions. You do not touch a Tall Pines trail until you get all the way east to Raven Lake at Hwy #35.

Yes - Baysville is only 20 km from Huntsville on Brunel Road (Muskoka Rd #2). See attached!

I am located about 5 km north of Baysville directly off of Brunel Road - I have been since 1981. It gives you fantastic options for day loops in all four directions.

Good food can be found at the old "Birch Haven Resort" restuarant - called Windego (sp). The resort has been renamed - the "Landscapes of Lake of Bays".
