Search launched for Nfld. snowmobiler

GANDER, N.L. -- A search was launched Friday night for a man missing after a snowmobile broke through the ice on a lake just east of Gander.

The machine carrying three men, believed to be in their 50s, went into the water on Soulis Lake.

A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched to the area, said a spokesman for the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax.

One man made it to shore, the second was rescued by the crew of the chopper, and the search continued for the third man.

:banghead: What are people thinking, 3 on a sled, with no amount of ice to be found anywhere on the rock.

Unfortunate but avoidable.

If this is the same snowmobile accident that i knew the guys that happened to then they were not on 1 ski-doo, there were 3 of them on 3 ski-doos. It was in the night, when guy went down and when the ice caved the other went down, the next guy tried to escape, he was on a switchback 600 Turbo and he came to open water, skimmed across it all and got to the side, then went back to the cabin to get help, got help and on his way back, he suck his ski-doo as well. 2 of them drowned and 1 made it out.
