It's not that big of a deal anymore and it has nothing to do with mother nature the Snowmobile club leads you to believe shit is good. And there was no effort made in the woods to groom.

QUOTE(snojockey @ Jan 3 2006, 11:45 AM)
I just returned from Island Pond and well,it is what is.Between Saturday and Sunday I managed to put on 273 miles. My father has been riding up there since tuesday and he gave me a good idea how trails the  would be when I joined him for the weekend.I was going whether it was good, fair  or poor because I was anxious to try my new sled. The Canaan area had good snow cover and with last few miles of trail going into town  were covered with snirt.Other trails were worse than others but it's early season riding.Trail 106 was smooth and very fast,a part of 114 that connects to powerline had some major waterholes and if one was not prepared to stop suddenly there would have been a wreck! This weekend  you really had to use caution and not hammer your sled from corner to corner. And yes my sled has a little bit of Vermont mud on her but,I have seen worse conditions i.e-Late spring riding. We did bump into Dave Paige at the Chez Pigeon on Sunday. He basically told us what we had already known and that is Brighton will not groom until they get more snow. The drags would get beat up pretty bad if they were to drop them down.
*

They're grooming today. Read the trail report on thier website. Nothing has change as a matter of fact things should be worse because of all the traffic. So if they were't dropping the drags over the weekend why today? Anyhow Im not as aggravated as I was yesterday. I personally didn't wreck anything but I seen some battle scars on others. Fortunately contrary to these farmers beliefs I have been riding there long enough to know where and where not to go. But when the places you can ride and where THERE IS SNOW they didn't try to groom it. But as soon as you left Brighton other clubs groomed. No big deal. Kills me to see how easy it is to get these flannel shirt wearing, double wide living, maple syrup making, farmers in an uproar....Popcorn Chicken at the Chez is mint. :div20:

Prozac Boy,

I am ashamed to admit that I even live in the same state as you. With your attitude is no wonder why Vermont natives call us all flat-landers. Club members do the best they can with what they have, instead of bitching why don't you get up there and help since you think you can do a better job! If you have really have been riding out of IP for so many years like you stated, you should know by now what to expect when you arrived. It's EARLY yet! Riding seldom gets good until mid-January. I was in IP Wednesday through Friday and I saw groomers rolling Wednesday and Thursday trying to get things flat before the rain came in. Ever hear of the weather report? I called my wife here in CT and she even told me it was going to rain Thursday night. YOU HAVE KNOWONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF!!!!!!!

Nicely put REV MAN! I'm a native Vermonter and I hate to see the disrepect that "some" people show. Your correct, it's EARLY.. give it a week or two and it'll be like riding in the County here in Maine. I give the clubs nothing but props for doing such a great job with what they have to work with! Keep up the Good work! :div20:

First things first - I am in NO WAY agreeing with Prozac Boy. I can understand his frustration but I also know that this is a very uncertain sport and there are no guarantees, to say the least.

I've read all the posts and there is one thing that puzzles me...

IF they are grooming now as their latest club report says, what is the difference between now and over the weekend? They didn't get any more snow, did they?

On several occasions, I have seen clubs do very limited grooming (both in VT and Maine) on Friday's and over the weekend only to see them go out in full force on Monday or Tuesday. It's almost like they are catering more to the locals that can ride mid-week.

I think this is one of the questions that Prozac Boy is trying to get answered (along with why were other clubs in the area grooming?)

Once again, just because I'm from CT, don't flame me. Just thinking out loud here.

PS - I love riding in Vermont! From Woodford to IP and everything in between!

The idea of grooming mon, tue , wed is that there are less people on trails and it is much safer . Also a trail groomed on a monday is still good on fri ( with exception of holiday week , wich it was ) a trail groomed on friday night is usulay shit by saturday afternoon

I understand what you are saying about not grooming over the weekend. I often wondered the same until I got to talk to one of the groomer operators a few years back. The main reason they didn't go out this past weekend was it would be a waste of time. With the amount of traffic the trails where going to see there would have been nothing left. They let everyone go out and tear it all to hell this weekend and rolled today and probably will the rest of the week because the trails will see alot less traffic. This will give the base a chance to set-up hard as a rock. This way when the good snow does come everything is already hard and flat and it will take allot less snow to make the conditions go from fair to perfect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are still reporting that the logging roads are in good to very good condition. Trails leaving town through the lumber yard are fair to good with some icing on the corners. .....

And here is the trail report from last Friday afternoon:

"Mother nature wasn't very good to us again yesterday. We had a mild day with light rain showers throughout the day. Temperatures turned colder during the night and we are currently receiving light snow showers.

For those of you that want to ride this weekend, we are reporting that the trails leaving town through the lumber yard are in poor to fair condition with some open water bars. Trails leaving town through the state beach area are fair to good. Snow is thin with some icing in the corners. Logging roads would be your best chance of riding and reporting that those are in good condition with about an inch of new snow.

Mountain trails are a mix of anything from poor to fair to good. Watch for open water bars. Again we suggest the best riding is in the mountains on all the old logging roads and that they are in good riding condition.

Please use extreme caution, stay off all bodies of water and ride within the flagged areas only."

The report previous to this was last Tuesday, which while more positive, was followed by several days of above freezing temperatures and rain, especially Thursday when there was over 1/2 an inch.

Did you even check a weather forecast or any of the other reports here on HCS that indicated that the riding was deteriorating?

Hard to see how the Brighton club did anything that would "lead you to believe shit is good."

I put 260 miles on in island pond this weekend also. I thought the trails were in a hell of alot beter shape than this time last year considering I put 3 miles on last year because there was no snow. Once oyu got out of town in the forest the trails were fine. The trail out of town is always beat up. even after two feet of snow. I thougth it was icy but if there was more snow the whoops would have been that much bigger. I ride a rev and had no problems with the trails at all. the bumps were the same on sunday as they were on friday wich is pretty good considering no snow.

You're right my bad shouldn't have gone that route. My apologies to all those who were offended by that. It wasn't meant to be taken to heart. I stand by my opinion about Brighton though like it or not. Why can't you all just disagree without the friggin lynching though makes people get on the defensive and start attacking back and that's counter productive. What did you all put out an all call to come to the Vermont forum to light me up? So for the last few years I come on here and Praise Brighton for the amazing job they do and it gets no action but if you say anything negative you get fried? So you ignored the part that said that Thursday had "light rain showers throughout the day", that "the trails leaving town...are in poor to fair condition" and that "mountain trails are a mix of anything from poor to fair to good"?

I would definitely have second thoughts after reading such a report. Sounds like it was expected to be hit or miss, which is what you got.

I feel bad that you dropped a $$$$$ this past weekend, but I can't see how this report combined with all the other reports posted on this site last week would lead you to expect anything other than extreme variance in the conditions throughout the region.

So maybe I shouldn't have ripped however if you get a trail report from the Club itself you should be able to go with that. Everyday people have different opinions on what's good and what's not good. All these tunnel vision bashing dicks just want to bandwagon fry someone. I don't get up north to do trail stuff but I give in all those jars everywhere I go. I buy my sleds in Vermont I buy all my stuff from Kingdom Cat even though I can find it cheaper on the net. So I don't deserve the flatlander, asshat whatever other non imaginitive crap. And I never said that the clubs don't do a good job. As a matter of fact I said that everywhere around there was good. So read the post before you get all your flannel shirts in an uproar.  stirthepot.gif

ajm1bam,

I think your going a little far here. Let me ask you this? If you where to see my rig WITH Connecticut plates running up 91 would you call me a flatlander? I guess is yes. What if I told you I was born and raised in VT but now live in CT? Am I still a flatlander? . There are plenty of good people that come from all different parts of the country, not just the state of Vermont. Sure there are also allot of assholes that come from all parts of the country including VT. Maybe you should not be so quick to judge people by the plates they have on their rig.

Bashing any club is definitly not the right idea. Had I stopped and thought about it a day I still would have posted the same basic idea just not in that particular tone and insult. My bad Im man enough to admit it. Not changing my tune just saying I did it the wrong way. Im sure there were reasons for them not going out not sure what they were and really at this point don't give a shit. They did go out and groom on Tuesday with basically the same conditions so my bitch was correct but trashing the club was wrong. I guess after all these years of going there you get spoiled and get used to mint trails. mog.gif

Just figure if it's Saturday night there's a pretty good chance it's going to be there. And yea the ticket thing sux but Im into dickhead Teddy for a few hundred bucks. He hates "Flatlanders" as well. stirthepot.gif

Teddy doesn't hate just flatlanders,he is a ticket writing machine to everyone! As far as the train blocking incident last year, that was just wrong but it was state police involved with that deal.

he doesn't car who you are, anyone is up for tickets. however, he does like the out of state license plates, as they can't contest the ticket in court as easily.

I have heard nothing but negitive things from all my family and anyone who knows of him.. He was probably the fat kid in school that everyone picked on so now this is his revenge! I know I go 5 mph under the speed limit when I go through Island Pond just because I don't have the patience to deal w/ him after driving 4 hours from Maine.

Interesting how the bashing has gone from the quality of IP trails to Ted Miller. Heck, if you behave yourself then you'll never visit with Ted. Just remember the locals re-elect him every year. Anyway he can't see the color of the license plates from most distances. So, that has to be a message.
