Our service club is raffling off a 1974 Lynx II 340. The sled has about 50 original miles on it and is in NEW condition...except for a some rust on the metal parts under the hood. We have some magic cleaner stuff (can't remember the name of it) that is supposed to remove the rust and leave the metal exposed. A question for the vintage experts....would we be better off to paint the metal, or leave it??
We are raffling off the sled as "original" and not restored because of it's condition. Is there really a difference?? All we have to do is some cleaning, and I did replace the crank seals just beacause we want to make sure it will run properly.
Keep it original and leave it alone. You can clean it up but don't paint the metal or replace. There is a differance between original and restored. You don't know what the person who wins the raffle is planning on down with the sled. They could win it and try to resell it, just throw it in the sled and forget it, le the kids ride it, or they might just plan on showing it. In most vintage shows you are allowed to touch up/paint a certain % of the metal and still be classifed as original. Sometimes this varies between shows, but most of the time they are close. A lot of times what happens is you start working/touching up one thing and it leads to another thing, then another and pretty soon your restoring the whole sled.
Either way GOOD LUCK WITH YOU RAFFLE :div20:
