Hi, we are planning a trip to the Laconia area this summer (around June). I am looking for suggestions on things to see/do, recommended places to eat/stay. etc. I would like to bring the boat maybe and check out some area history. Any suggestions are appreciated.

There are a lot of great lakes in the area. You have Winnipesakee (sp), Winnisquam, and squam (Where on golden pond was filmed) Weirs beech is great for the kids and there are a lot of activities right in the area like water slides and game rooms. Also Train rides and cruises. Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies so far. There are no children that are going. There will be a group of us, probably 3 couples. The bike week sounds fun, but not all of us have Harleys. In fact, most have Jap bikes. I am thinking of flying out there, then renting either a cabin, or going camping, perhaps renting a boat and checking out the town history and night life. We would also like to do some hiking and climbing as well. Hope that gives a little more insight to the activities we are looking for. I chose the lakes region because it seems like it would have the most activity. I have done some research on the internet and have found out some neat things. There are some ghost towns and things that would be neat to check out. I don't know how close these would be to the Laconia area.

hmmmmm, rock climbing? The best rock climbing is up in rumney, roughly a 30 minute drive from laconia, also some excellent bouldering in patuckaway st. park, but.... june.. bring your bug spray and plenty of chalk, as it'll be humid and very buggy! And..... bike week isn't just for harley's there was prolly thousands of rice rockets there last year! there's tons of good hikes just depends on how long of a hike ya wanna do!

You must;
Drive up Mt. Washington.
Take the COG railway up Mt. Washington.
Climb Mt. Chocoroua (on foot). (Second most photographed Mt. on earth, only Mt. Fuji beats it)
Take a cruise on the MS Mt. Washington out of Center Harbour.
Experience bike week first hand. Oldest bike rally on earth. Crazy. 100,000 bikes.
Drive over the Kanc from Conway to Twin.
Drive up through Dixville Notch and see the Balsams wilderness..(just beyond the Mt. Washington Auto road)
See the Mt. Washington Hotel...
Go count Moose up in Errol.
Eat out @ "The Woodshed" in Moultonboro. (Just outside laconia).
Go check out the "Castle in the clouds" Rt. 171/109 in Moultonboro..
Oh, and go swimming up on the Kanc. in the river.
Climb some 700' cliffs @ Whitehorse ledge / Catherdral Ledges in Conway.
No place on Earth beats this part of NH. No place. I know many wealthy peeps who could live anywhere. They say this place is unique. Have fun, and watch out...you'll want to stay..

Your the CapN or harbormaster or what?
I had two clients get arrested on the Mt. Washington...Brain injured and out of control..They went to Belknap County Jail. One threw chairs into the lake, another crashed a wedding on the upper deck..he got hog tied by the crew in the downstairs "hold" or whatever..I had 4 hight level (very very bad actors) clients, thank God the worst one decided to help me..he was a saint..couldn't believe it...He was known for knocking staff out cold with one punch..Good lord, what a man will do for a dollar..

Beautiful pictures. Thanks for all of the replies! I am printing this thread to show to the other people in the group. The cruise sounds like fun. We were married on a cruise ship so it is something that I would like to plan in. It is also fun to meet other hcs'rs! Is there a centrally located hotel that we can stay at (near all the things that were suggested to do?) We are probably looking at no less than a one week stay. The bike week may be a possibility, but it is up to the group. Yes, with scenery like that I can see why people would want to stay there. The weather there is similar to ours, so we know that June will be a warm and mosquito filled month. I don't think that some of the people in the group will do as well climbing those faces pictured because it will be one of their first experiences. Someone mentioned that there is a river. Is there any place to rent canoes? How close is this airport?
http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLCII can't find tickets into it.

Hey Gal, Bike week is insane with congestion on the roads anyplace near laconia. You'd be better off staying in Ossipee or in Sandwich...some place just outside the main event area..Lemme think...Thing is, most motels and hotels are booked solid on bike week..better call NOW if you want a room..I'd recommend the Wind Song in West Ossipee...it's in a spot to allow easy access to food/drink/and 10,000 harleys going by 24/7....laconia is 25 miles west, conway is 20, and Mt. Washington is 40 minutes north..the river is on the "Kanc" (the one I mentioned) and you can rent Canoes @ the canoe king in west ossipee. They are 800' up the road from the windsong. The owners are HCS members.
Here's the "kanc"..

That airport is smack dab in the middle of Laconia. I do not think it is a comm. airport...best best is manchester airport, 1-1/4 hour drive south from here.

Hi Articcatgal....
Lots of places to stay in Meredith and Laconia but with bike week you need to make reservations NOW. Here's a link to 4 places on or across the street from Meredith Bay at the Town Docks. Great lodging and great restaurants. Also check out Meadowbrook Farms, an outdoor concert venue in Gilford which is next to the Laconia airport. The summer venue at Meadowbrook is not yet available but keep checking their website and you may get to see a good concert while in town. Flying into Laconia can be costly. Its a small airport with mostly private charters. Manchester airport (MHT) is you're best bet. 1 hour by car to Laconia from Manchester.
An easy local hike would be Mount Major in Alton but there are more challenging hikes and climbs in the White Mountains (Franconia Notch) 45 minutes north on I-93. Patricks Pub is a good watering hole, also near the airport.
Also check out this link to NH department of tourism. Its geared toward winter now but keep checking for summer events.
Good luck with your plans and welcome to New Hampshire!

We decided that we will be coming into the area between June 1 and June 10. That way we do not run into the traffic. It could be even a little earlier, depending on the weather and when hay season starts. It would be neat to check out the bike week but that is not the purpose of the trip this time. I will check with my travel agent to see if there are tickets into Manchester available. I am sure that it will be a great time, just from some of the suggestions and scenery. One of the things that I like about NH is that is seems like there is more freedom, and not so many laws. Catching a concert would be great to. The best trips are the ones that are not all planned and are spontaneous! Kinda like when we went to Watkins Glen and ended up on a wine tour, then we stayed at a marina and rented some paddle boats. The guy let us strap our cooler to the back of the boat, lol. I am assuming that they have car rentals at the Manchester airport? Once again, thanks for all of the suggestions!
