Brother has a 1978-1980 440 Exciter. Run good last year with exception to busted seam in the exhuast. Welded the exhaust still ran good, but this year it boggs when giving it gas.
What he's done. Removed tank and emptied, changed fuel filter, checked fuel pump(vacuum) and it's pumping, changed plug, and took apart carb and cleaned real good. Put it all back together and still runs the same. I thought it could be a bad diaphragm,or bad gasket in the carb, but though I would post something so if it still boggs after the carbs rebuilt, I'll have something else to look at.
Thanks

Broken reed, to much belt clearance, belt deflection to great, belt width too narrow, plugged pilot jet, mouse nest in airbox or exhaust system, poor vacuum due to bad ring sealing, or engine air leaks.
Any or all of the above.

Have you checked your carb boot? On my 81 Enticer 340 the carb boot cracked about half way down and it was constantly sucking air, giving it a lean bog when I hit the gas. Didn't run so hot either obviously lol.
Anyway, take off the belt or put the back of the sled up on a stand. Do the normal throttle operation that it normally bogs at. This way you are eliminating any part of the drive train (clutches etc). If it still bogs than it's obviously in the carbueration or engine. Check compression, did he adjust something on the carb prior to rebuilding that he forgot about. Also just like the above poster said. Check all that stuff.... that should be all you can do.

Well, I don't think it is a clutch issue as it runs fine for alittle bit after turning the choke off, but then dies out. It seems like its not getting enough gas. Put on a new fuel pump, but still runs the same, maybe slightly better. Started messing with one of the carb screws at the top, not the idle screw, and its seems to run better for a bit and then just dies out again.
Just don't know what else to do. Carb kit? new diaphram? Don't want to put a bunch of cash into this sled as it is pretty old.
what's next?
