I want to remove the altitude compensator on a 98 powder special. Can i just unhook it and plug the ports then re-jet it to a zr600 spec.?

Thanks

Ya they do. They can be a pain in the butt sometimes.

are you changing anything drastic on the machine to where its running bad. In my experience with the altittude compensators they actually made the machine more responsive on the throttle when set correctly. If you are replacing any lines on that set up make sure you make them the same as the originals were. If you replace the vent lines to the Carbs, they have to be the same length carb to carb to equalize the pressure at both of them.

But without knowing exactly the pains your experiencing, I see no reason you couldn't just run regular vent lines on the carbs and jetting everything to ZR specs.

Saber7cat tech is correct make sure when you disconnect the lines that both carbs end up with them same lenght. We did this on my old 580 powder special then re-jetted and clutch it to ZR580 specs. Got way better fuel mileage after we took out the altittude compensator.
If i can recall there was a line on each carb the we connected together and the other just got pluged.

my powder special blew up becuase of it. Everything was set for 5000ft and up but the compensator couldn't compensate for 0ft elevation at sea level. I know they put some up date kit in mine to get rid of the compensator, not exactly sure what it is or how it goes on but it was called an update kit that you can order, it was something like 30 bucks.
