A 48-year-old Randolph Township man was killed early Sunday when his snowmobile crashed in the 4800 block of Waterloo Road, authorities said.

The victim, James K. Goodyear, who lived nearby in the 3500 block of Waterloo, was identified by the Portage County Coroner's Office. He died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest, coroner's official Wayne Enders said.

According to investigators from the Ravenna post of the State Highway Patrol, Goodyear was traveling east on Waterloo when he lost control of the snowmobile on a curve. He went off the left side of the road, struck a mailbox and was thrown from the snowmobile, then hit a telephone pole.

He was not wearing a helmet, patrol Lt. Mike Marucci said.

A county snowplow driver came upon the crash scene and reported it at 5:37 a.m., although investigators suspect the crash occurred sometime after midnight, Marucci said.

Coroner's official Enders said toxicological tests were requested to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

I used to live right down the road from there.

There have been a couple of snowmobile related death's in that same area. The snow conditions are almost always very poor and most occur on a older machine. There is usually very little snow on the roads and it make is very hard to turn. Factor in alcohol and late night riding and it spells disaster.

There is no real "trail system" in Ohio thats worth a crap and most guy's are forced to road ride. The state needs to step up and open up some area for snowmobilers!
