My buddy Dave is looking at a 99 XCR 440, the first year for the edge, to buy for about 3 grand. The sled is in great condition, even though it was raced a couple of times. (it really is outstanding for a racer, I cant believe it he must have stayed in the way back of the pack). Now Im not familiar with how this machine is, can anyone relate to the good and bad points of this machine?!

Alright Ill tell him, I do recall reading in one of the magazines that they thought the Edge that year was no where near ready for production, not to mention all out snocross destruction. But was that mostly the issue with them, the engine?!

The Edge rear suspension originally came with a coil-over rear shock instead of torsion springs. It sucked. The engine is also REALLY twitchy with the "peanut" slide carbs. I'd pass. You can get a lot nicer machine than that for 3 grand.

Thats what I told him, he probably can get a ZR 440 Sno Pro a year newer or so and more reliable, or a different year Polaris 440 for the same amount or a little higher, hes bent on getting a 440 race machine though and it has to be either a Cat or a Polaris.

Yeah, if you look on the Amsnow forums, there have been 440 Pro-Xs on there that would probably fall into your buddy's price range.

It wasn't ready for production. Very similar to Artic Cat's release of the Firecat.

I am also looking at a 99xcr, but it now has a 99 xc500 engine in it, because the 440 kept blowing up. I know that there was a lot of issues but what were they, I am not racing it it would just be a trail/ditch sled and I am not jumping anything really that big. I know people said the rear suspension sucked, why? How much travel is there. Keep in mind I am only paying $1400 for this, its the cheapest I have found to get into an edge chasis and I am coming from a 95 indy with the xc101 rear suspension :banghead: , anything is better than that. Please post your comments.

99's liked to crack the chassis in various spots. I researched them when I was thinking about buying one years ago. The motor was a high reving tempramental motor that needed constant jetting attention. 00 or 01 would be a better selection. Spend a few extra dollars now and it'll be well worth it.

Looked at one once, too. Guy I ride with told me to pass unless I wanted to be rejetting it every 2 hrs.
Needless to say....I passed.

They are finky but not that bad. They are not the sled for the average person thats forsure. the 00 440's are much better but they still needed the updated braces...but a better sled over the 99

My buddy had a 99' xcr 440 and he had no problems at all. Never had to rejet, never broke the motor, the drive shaft broke once cut that was from jumping(shouldnt have happened even from jumping it was just a lemon driveshaft). Alls he had into it was boyesen reeds and that thing did 104 mph, no bullshit! Could take most 700's and 800's
