My buddy just picked up a 1978 Enticer 250 from an uncle. Since that was in his price range (free), that is what he got. It's running great now but with a little TLC. But, how do we get it registered?

No one has any documentation for the sled. However, there is an old sticker on the side.

1. Can the numbers on the sticker be used to identify the snowmobile for registration?

2. Do we have to get a salvage title like a car?

3. What is the price to register?

My questions

I'm buying yama yooper's old sled here. I'm pumped and it looks like a great first snowmobile of my own.

4. Is it just like purchasing a car? (sign over title, pay taxes, pay registration)

5. Does anyone have a link to registering a snowmobile in Michigan? I looked but only found operating laws so far.

Thanks for your help!

I am kind of in the same boat. I bought a sled from a state that does not require registration, hence nothing to transfer. I have called the DMV (and you may want to as well)more than once to get clarification and this is what I believe is the requirement:

The DMV requires some form of documentation showing the transfer from one person to the other. They do not require (although recommended) the previous registration. I tiold them I do not have a reg, or title, she advised to use a bill of sale.

For your sled, yeah, it would be a lot like a new car, except you will need some documentation (see above), since this is MI, and the sled is in Mi, they should have a registration of some sort.

There should be a sticker or plate that has a VIN on the chassis. The VIN might also be stamped on the tunnel (on mine it is toward the rear).

Does anyone else have a different interpretation of the DMV requirements?

Once you get a live body on the phone at the DMV they are pretty helpful, but call a DMV in an area that would deal with sleds, i.e call Luce or Chippewa county DMVs rather than Jackson or Clinton. Just my experience.....

Good luck!

Sled Solutions If you scroll down a bit you can read what the Michigan law requires

These plates that Paul sells aren't required, but they'll keep the stickers from sliding off the belly pan. :div20:

In Michigan you only need a bill of sale or certificate of origin to register a snowmobile with the secretary of state. they are trying to mandate Titles for sleds in MI, i signed a petition against this at the bronson auction last month.

Bill of Sale being a handwritten piece of paper from a private owner?

edit) make sure the date is not more than, I think, 2 weeks old or it will cost you extra
