last time there was 2000 both wkends, spent the time waiting for a friend to show with out 45 foot trailer helping folks out on lake with sled problems, ran into one of my customers where i worked, he was so wrapped in late 60's/early70's apparel, that i didn't recognize him, he did me though :smilielol: started a great friendship that to this day has gotten better everytime we pound a few :beerchug:

Thats what I wanted to here, I read a post earlier about MI events and it said called off this year so i thought I would start a fresh thread to make surebits still on. I have stayed in the same rental cabin for the past 10 tears. now hes selling the cabins as condos so I have to find a new place. Kinda a bummer. I hope we get good snow this year.. Thanks for the info, looking forward to it now. I really like vintage racing too!

Last year was nothing impressive. Seemed like it was dead.

Phatman Shootout on Otsego Lake has had huge turnouts the last couple years. :div20:

its still going on and there are new people in charge this year, people with a fire lit under there ass, not like the retired people who have been in charge the last ten years!!! it will probally be 5 years before its the same old t.u.t it used to be ,but its a start in the right direction for sure!!!now we must deal with the d.n.r.!! and the road commission!!

Who wants to waist all there time and money going to TUT when all you do is get harassed by the local police and DNR hiding in the bushes just waiting for you to do something wrong? So i say this to TUT this year. :santa_finger:
BuddyP
Tip up town? You mean people still go to that?
SnoCrazy
Last time I was at TUT both weekends was in 2001. Used to be a fun time! Raced the Thundercat around all day both weekends. 10 to 30 sleds line up and take off. Race behind the Limberlost till wee hours of the night. I haven't been back since, but from what I hear and read, I haven't missed much.

Anyone going to PERCHVILLE in East Tawas in February?? Not a snowmobiling event, but a huge party and drunkfest!!! Very large beer tent with entertainment. There's other events happening too like polar bear swims, demo derby, softball, heli rides, etc. Wife and I brought some friends from Grand Rapids up there the last 2 years now they are hooked on going up there for the party. Just make sure to have someone able to drive because there are 3 police depts in town. I used to live in Tawas all my life and moved away almost 2 years ago. Still have a cottage up there.

Tip Up Town is an accident waiting to happen. It should be a fishing festival and nothing else. like it was intended to be. Why do people think it's a snowmobile thing? It was a fishing festival long before snowmobiles were invented.

Why can't it be a snowmobiling thing? Anyway, it was the trail guys racing 30 sleds wide out in front of Holiday on the Lake that ruined it (i gotta admit I was one of them a few years back) which also stopped the lake racers form running on the north end, so now the Fat Man shootout is starting to turn into trail sleds running 30 wide out in the middle of the lake. That was a accident waiting to happen least season. All that is going to do is shut down that too or make the DNR not allow us to pull a permit for the shootout. So far the racers have had good luck and relations with the DNR and pulling a permit for the actual Fat Man's race.

I may be missing something, but are you trying to say the fat man is for you lake racers only? I agree it was getting out of hand over on the trail side last year but can you blame them? if you would go get in line to race it would take ya 15-20 mins to even get to the front, then you would get a bunce of grief from some of the guys on how the trail studs were tearing up the track, Randolf puts alot of time and effort into running this thing, and a very good friend of mine plows the track every year and only has a trail sled, so i say if he wants to run on the track he plowed, he or anybody else shouldn't have to hear and shit from the guys that think they own the track because there there with there lake racers. Last i knew its was a end of the year bash for everyone to enjoy, not just a select few m2c.gif

The good old days of tip up town....70 sleds side by side drag racing, race trailers out on the ice, spectators out on the ice for the unsanctioned back lake drags, 110 mph for 3 miles, helicopters, women galore, craziness....

The new days of tip up town, no racing, speed limits, decreased attendance...I don't even go any more because of the no racing and speed limits....They really screwed up a good thing. It used to be something I looked forward to. :cn:

Sorry, that last sentance in my post came off the wrong way.... anybody that attends the Fat Man's is a racer (whether it be race sleds or trail sleds)... ok I'm just being technical now. Anyway, all I'm saying is if it get's out of hand outside the marked off designated area where the permit is ok'd for there is a good chance the DNR would just not issue a permit anymore (at least I think they had a permit), then Nobody would be raceing... just like at Houghton lake now. Anybody can race at the Fat Man's as far as I'm concerned no matter what you have for studs, unless Randolph and his guys say otherwise. I have no say in that. The roped off area is not just for Lake racers, it's for everybody. I know it take awhile to get threw the line but sometimes we have to give up some things to keep what we have... again, I'm just as guilty of doing it. I buzzed the trail sled out there last year and was one of the 30 in the lineup. This post just got me thinking. Like you said, Randolph and the guys do a awsome job of taking their time to set this up. I think as long as the local's don't complain much we'll be ok either way. I think that was the other half of the problem at TUT.

Road Comm warriors have been plowing the road sides down to dirt, making it hard to navigate around town and get to the trails.

Hmm, how about DONT DO ANYTHING WRONG?? Guess that's out of the question. Ive been going both weekends since the mid 90s... and NEVER had a problem with the DNR. Remember, they can only bust you when YOU screw up.

OKAY I'm the one who said Tip Up Town was cancelled.

I should have been a little more clear. I was talking about the RACE that was moved from there to Cadillac not the actual TUT event.

Hell this is probably all over the net by now!!!!!! OOPPS

Remember all union people should not spend any money in the houghton lake area. The people that live up there think we are all payed to mutch and dont do shit at work. So remember to not spend any of your over payed uninon wages there.

Ya, seemed like every weekend there were those red flares placed out on the ice at the scene of an accident at nightime. Gets a little scary with the drunks climbing aboard their sleds after bartime doing 100+. Or, someone hitting one of those tall pressure cracks that's like a concrete wall.

It was still a fun time racing the sleds 10, 20, 30+ wide all day long!! Good times!!
yamahauler
Yea, those pressure cracks are fkn nuts!! I go every year, but dont ride the lake at night. Usually drive truck to TUT site for kids, then ride the off-trails by the cottage, away from the mania.

Recognize any of these sleds?? BTW, does sticking your ass way up in the air help?? Doesnt seem to, as leader is sitting... dunno.gif

Some years the pressure cracks were almost non-existant, and some years they were lined all over the place! And, whan was it, 3 years ago when 2 or 3 people died plunging through the open water near the north shore in Jan?

I can just hear the tune of 30 sleds winding out at 100mph+ right now! Music to my ears!!
