my 3 buddy's and i stopped at schafer's bait and tackle in cadillac on friday. the guy complained that we were all out of state and that it would take too long to enter in all of the stuff into the computer. (out of state residents have to enter in their addresses and other info) so the guy ran everybody's info on one name. we paid our 100$. he didn't tell us untill we were on our way out that he ran our stuff on one guy's info. he explained that it wasn't a big deal and that we were not breaking any laws, so we were cool with it.
we walked outside, cleaned our windows and affixed our trail permits on our windshields.. we started riding at sundown. after 25 miles or so, we noticed that one of our permits were gone. by the end of the night, everybody's permits had turn up gone. we were riding alone with no crowds, so theft was not an issue. we were not riding through thick brush either. the temperature should not have played a role. those permits are designed to be affixed in cold weather. there is no reasonable explaination other than the permit adhesive is junk...... i have permits from 2001 and up, on my sled with no signs of peeling whatsoever. these were legit permits....we watched the guy print them.
the worst part is ... i'm pretty sure we don't have a leg to stand on because we lost the other halves to the permits.

so just be warned.....keep all pertinent info on your permits i think that this year's batch may be a big problem for quite a few people. :frech32:

As far as who buys them it desn't matter, asl long as you have one on your sled. They arent like registration stickers.

I have had better luck with the pre-printed stickers instead of the ones that are printed as you wait. Most dealers sell the pre-printed ones.

Also; after rereading the post, weather does have an effect on ANY sticker. If anyone told you or you thought that installing stickers in the cold on cold machines was ok it isnt. Most stickers say not to apply on a machine unless its clean and free of oil and wax and so an and not to apply in temps below 40(or whatever degrees).

Well, I don't about the quality of the DNR permit stickers...I am willing to bet that the glue was old from last season, or from a place that doesn't move many permits. This is NOT the first time I have heard of the store bought stickers failing. Next time order them from the Michigan Snowmobile Association or the Michigan DNR website. You will get the real deal, not the dime store version.

Now, fpr safety concerns, trails do not officially open until December 1st.

You probably already now it was Firearm Deer Season in Michigan, I personally would not want to be riding the woods in that part of the state during this time of the year, even during the "allowed" hours. I know, everyone rides AFTER it's dark and the hunters are in. Yeah, the HUNTERS, they are in for the night. It's the poachers stray bullets that worry me. Plenty of pretend hunters shoot deer after hours up in those parts, you don't want to be caught by a stray round.Just be careful.

I love to ride too, We had way more snow at my place north of Cadillac than they did where you were, but I left my sleds home when I pulled out Wednesday night for the 4 day holiday. I chose to hunt and visit with friends. There were plenty of sleds flying around the area though, thankfully none went trespassing on my land while I was hunting this year :div20:

as i said in my post, we didn't start riding untill sundown. we double checked the laws before we went riding. you're correct in saying that the trails do not open untill december, however, it is not illegal to ride in michigan before december 1st.
as for what i was told in wexford county, the multiseason trails can be ridden by snowmobiles, just be aware that they can be used by anyone else as well. so ,in other words, don't be surprised if you go around a corner and you see a hunter going home in his f150 directly in front of you on the trail. i don't hunt personally, but two of the guys that were with me do. they were very insistant upon waiting till' sundown to ride. is it not illegal to hunt at night? on the trails, we saw several hunters walking back from there spots.....every one of them that we saw waved or nodded at us.....we even stopped along m-55 ,just as we were starting out, and saw wexford county's finest. the cop waved at us as well. all of us ride registered sleds that are safe and legal.(i can't always vouch for their operators lol)
to automatically assume that we were not supposed to be there, is a little insulting. i ride with a group of guys who know what its like to have out of towners disrespect your land, laws, privacy and property. we live close to to il. state line and deal with it at all of our beaches in the summer. we would not knowingly do that!. but on the other side of the coin, i know where your coming from when you posted. there are alot of bad apples ruining it for every one. i see them on almost every trip. it's very discouraging to see...... i know that you weren't bashing me, i just wanted to set the record straight. thanx for the advice!!!:div20:

you are correct in saying that the application area needs to be cleaned......we all used alcohol wipes. the stickers say on them that they can be applied in 10 deg.f weather or higher......it was at least 25 deg. for all four to simply blow off is a problem that can be chalked up to application, but not in this case. thank you for the advise.

The ones that print while you wait are junk. You have to get the pre printed ones. :div20:

Hey, I wasn't against you riding...just wanting to be sure you were informed and safe. I am a hunter and sledder and I would hate for the two to clash in the media.

Yeah, it is illegal to shoot aftert dark...BUT POACHERS DO NOT CARE! They will take at shot at law enforcement if the feel threatened, just be careful is all I was saying.

beagle,
i agree with everything you posted. i just wanted to set the record straight you or anyone who might reead the posts, that's all. i didn't take any offense to your post in its entirety. i didn't know exactly where you were coming from in a few lines, but the post was informative to me. i know now .... thank you for your advice....it is appreciated.

No problem, if you ever have questions you need answered and can't find them, contact me. I will do my best to get the answer and supply the contact info or reference of my source.

I have kept in touch with some past MSA board members and can get to the bottom of things pretty quickly...usually. If something can not be discussed yet due to a lawsuit or something I get find out either.

Have a great season :beerchug:
