SkirouleRTX
Hi, my name is Pete. i live in north east Ohio. I found this site while searching for parts and thought I should join. Two years ago I found a 1971 Skiroule RTX 340 factory racer model #62714 sitting in a barn mostly complete. It has a 340 SACHS SA2 340RX motor with dual tillys. For $20 I bought it from a garage sale and took it home as a little prodject to get another old klunker to have fun with. I searched for it on the internet and found out what it really was. But I still dont know too much about them. If any body knows any history or facts about them, that info would be appreciated. After I had it running and trashed the rotted drive sprockets and chain I decided to restore it. It took me 6 months to find drive sprockets that will work and about another 2 for a chain thats too long. I had the tunnel and chassis blasted and painted and have been slowly putting it back together. I need help in putting back together the track and chassis. If any body has a picture or something on how it goes that would be great. Another problem I have is a gas tank. The one that came with it looks like it got beat with a sledge hammer and has many cracks. It seems nearly impossible to find an original so I thought about using a MOON tank like I saw one on the net. There are many parts that I need, such as a windshield and trim, running board mats, ski shocks, grips, handle bar bracket, brake cable and handle, and of course a gas tank. Also the motor has never been rebuilt to my knowlege, can I still get parts for a SACHS SA2 340RX motor. If anyone, or if you know of anyone that can help me get going on this prodject that would be awesome!

SkirouleRTX,

Welcome! Great to find another "Pickle" fan. Depending on how much you know about the Skiroules, you may not take that right.

I can barely imagine you finding the RTX racer the way you did. In collecting old sleds, luck is everything. I found my first RTX racer for $100 at a small salvage yard. I was there when it came in. The business ownwer had no idea people actually collected old racers. That was 10 years ago. I thought EVERYBODY knew that by now. My dad used to manage a Skiroule dealerhip. He raced a pair of RTX racers. My first home as a baby was a living area in the back of that dealership. Wonder why snowmobiles are in my blood?

First bit of info I can positively tell you reguards the year of your sled. It is a 1972, not '71. The basic machine was built those two years only. The RX Sachs was the hottest engine used. It would rev to 10 grand, properly clutched. It was a 7-port engine with a short stroke and much more solid construction than the R-series engine used in 1971. The 440 R engine was a fan-cooled C-series Sachs engine, modified with free-air heads and twin carbs. No where near as strong. In 1971, in addition to the twin Sachs R, there was an R-series single, and also CCW (Canadian-Curtus-Wright free-air, made by Kioritz in Japan) twin 340 and 440 and a Hirth 800 triple. The 1972 racers were all Sachs RX. A 340 and 440 are well known. A 650 triple, far faster than the previous 800, was available as a kit. There MAY have been a few built factory. I know of none today, although I have nice chasis and a 650 RX. I have been trying for years to locate pipes, or even pictures of them. The other major change from 1971 to '72 was the rear suspension. The earlier racer used a 4 piece slide suspension that articulated in the middle. The '72s used more conventional 2 piece sliderails.

I don't know where you found the parts you have already aquired. I do have contct info for a couple of Canadian Skiroule collectors. My personal favorite parts source for Skiroule, and all old sleds, is G.P.I. in Crystal, MI. Unfortunately, RTX racer parts are all but gone there since I bought mine. Some collectors have grabbed up major parts. I picked up a few things I haven't yet used, like others have. I do have a few of the parts you want, but nothing I can sell right now. Some reproduction has been done. Try Mike at G.P.I. for smaller mechanical parts. Pistons are a very rare item for RX engines. In a addition to OE, Wiseco made a quality single L-ring forged piston for some time. They are now long out of production. If you find a bunch of old piton boxes to check somewheres, the pistons you want are 62mm Wiseco #2196.

Thanks for all the info vintage sled nut! And I have emailed RTXdoug like 10 times with no response. Last year we had spoken to each other when I got it running then out of nowhere we lost contact. I sent out a bunch of emails to RVI, rodgers skiroule parts, gpi, and a few others none of which I got responses from except GPI who didnt have the parts I was asking for. I didnt know how rare parts were for these, but I sorta expected it. So since I cannot find a gas tank and I'm getting the seat redone, what if I used a MOON tank for a gas tank and redid the seat so it sits on the tunnel without having to be supported by the tank? At this point I'm starting to change my focus to restoring it to a functional racer rather than a perfect restoration due to the lack of parts.

But I found the snowmobile after a game of golf. Me and my pops were riding home and we saw a sign that said estate sale and pulled in to check it out. Inside this barn were two snowmobiles. One ran and was $25. The one I got was parked behind it and was covered in dirt and was $20 and needed work, but was all there. It looked fast, with the huge dual tillys. The place was a zoo and the people who were running it knew nothing about anything, like a really nice huge horse drawn sleigh for $100. So $20 I brought it home and researched it and it took me a while to figure out what I had. I had trouble getting it run, the wiring was completey torn out and the previous owners added headlights and a tailight. Then I finally had spark but my gas tank looks like somebody beat it with a sledge hammer. So I bought this plastic tank patch (which doesnt work) and ghetto patched it. Then I had it running and rode it and it was fast. I fell in love with it as soon as I heard it fire up with the stinger pipes grinning-smiley-023.gif .

Then the rotted drive sprockets got trashed and fell apart, which broke my chain because of the nubs spinning on the track with all that vibration it snapped and was wedged so I had to pull it back to my garage by hand with a locked up track. Then I decide since it was rare to restore it and thats where I'm at now. One of these days I'd like to bring it up to eagle river for the show and vintage races.

I need help because I'm at the point where I'm running out of parts or using crappy parts to put it back together. Are you sure you dont want to sell any parts? grinning-smiley-023.gif

My dad is building a sled for eagle river. It's a Viking Vigilante(single cylinder 340 fan). He isn't using any of the stock drivetrain parts. We put in a 1980 SRX Jackshaft and and chaincaise in it. Also a 1980 Kawasaki Drifter rear suspension and track. We got all of these parts for free from some guy that was throwing them away. We had it out the other day and that honestly it has to be the fastest SLED (not just single cyl) i have ever ridden. What I am getting at is If you want to be competitive at eagle river you need to upgrade parts, you probably wont be competitive with all stock parts. But you can't put a jackshaft in it if you want to race in the RELIC classes(1971 and older), in the relic classes there are much more strickt rules... I love those RTX racers, last year there was only 1 at eagle river. I wish i had one of those!!!

Thanks, I'm not really worried about being competitive, but rather have a mostly original sled, like how it might have raced. Tomarrow will be warm so I can paint some parts if I can get to my school's sandblaster. I've pretty much assembled the whole rear suspension with the track and all. So that means when I get my handlebars and nerf bar back from the chromer, I can set the motor in and hook up the steering, and wire and plumb the motor. Then I need to have the hood and belly pan painted and I will be done(I abbreviated that alot BTW, still lots to do). I'm gonna call that guy with the pipes and see if he has parts. Just to humor me when is the Eagle River historic races and show at? I think its right at the start of January right?

I am not sure, I know it is the weekend before the World Championchip weekend... There is also a Reunion There in September, were they have a show and grass drags... That would be cool if you raced there, last year I only saw one there...

Just came across these posts I am new to this orum stuf anyway i have a complete SA2-340-RX motor in excellent condition and I was wondering what you all think it might be worth? I have a salvage yard and this was bought years ago and I just ran across it in my back storage area. Some locals are offering $200- $500 what would be a air price?

I bought the sled in this post from pete, a complete Sachs 340rx engine on ebay would go for $500 to $1000, i would not take less than $700 Sulley
vintage sled nut
Al,

I would say Sulley is in the ballpark for the value of this engine.

I would think $500 would be a reasonable minimum offer, but one that you could try to work the interested parties up from. $700 would be better. Still, there may be someone out there who'd go a grand or so, but not everyone has that kind of cash to put in to an old sled engine. Especially considering these sleds were rare and the parts to restore the rest of the machine today are rare and costly. These Sachs RX engines are rare, but so are the people with sleds that need them. Besides the Skiroule, they were used in Alouette, Northway, and Rolloflex race sleds.

Do you have any pipes for this sled? I might be interested in one or a set of them if they are for a Skiroule.

You can also do a search or ask around for a guy names Skiroule pete. Pete Purvich I think his name is. He is expensive I think for his parts, atleast for what I need which is non skirule related, but he will probably have what your looking for or knows who has it. I dont have his number but google "old skiroule pete" and you should be able to find him...or post on www.vintagesleds.com in the classisfieds for him...

This is the end product of the sled that started this post. Sulley
