You can only ride on private land with permission prior to the 19th of Dec. No riding on any Vast trails before Dec 19th.

No you can't ride tabor. There is a place in south vt. you can ride before vast opens but they keep it a damn secrete. I don't know where it is.

You can ride thru Smuggler's Notch on route 108 which is closed for car traffic during the winter. There is parking just past the Stowe ski resort where the state closes route 108. People have been riding up there on the road for years and I have never heard of any problems with the law.
This is not a VAST trail and is not effected by VAST's December 19th opening date.
I would have gone yesterday accept my sled is in the shop this week.

You may ride 108 but it's only a few miles up and back and that is it. During the day TONS of hikers, kids, dog walkers, climbers, x-country skiers and sightseeing tourists...and plenty of yahoos going waaaay too fast on sleds (given the foot traffic).........makes us responsible sledders REALLY look bad to a whole lot of people during the daytime, flying up and down with so many people around.......I hear so many complaints from people on that trail before the VAST trails open.............it is legal to be there, but it's a high profile place to ride.............

what about after dark in the evening? I think I've only been through there like once, I don't remember houses really nearby. hikers and all would be gone but not too late to upset early sleepers

I've been up in the notch a few times this year, but only at night. The nearest residence is a couple of miles away, noise is never an issue.
The daytime hikers/skiers/snowshoer's probably won't respect snowmobiles no matter how slow, courteous, or responisble we are, the fact that we're out there making noise and burning gas is enough to make em hate it no matter what.

That's the best thing to do, and no houses are near there! :div20:

We were up in Rutland over the weekend, and there were lots of snowmobiles on the VAST trails as well as hayfields etc. Saw a lot of mud. Didn't think it was too cool. Probably pisses the hunters off too. :banghead:

I agree that riding on VAST trails before December 19 is uncool and pisses off both the landowners and hunters whom are some of our best friends.

I think I used to train up through Smugglers notch when I was with the VT Army National guard. ( Mountain Warfare School) I used to see kids on those old Sno Scoots, riding up there all the time. :beerchug:
