Demolition
Earlier this month it was announced and covered by local media outlets that the provincial government finally got out of the holtel business when it sold the Hecla Island resort to private interests.

I read the news stories and they quoted the new ownership as indicating they would close the resort for up to a year while they complete renovations. I have no doubt that when they re-open the joint will be very nice. I suspect their prices will be higher as well.....but that's not what I'm so interested in.

Looking at my stash of maps, with the resort closing will the Interlake and Eastern clubs abandon the trails that link Victoria Beach and Hecla Island? What about Hecla Island to Riverton and as far north as Pine Dock?

The resort never did have fuel for sale, but at least you could truck up their with fuel in tow. The run extending from Traverse Bay (last gas on the way to Hecla) through the island to gas in Riverton will leave a few tanks dry if guys don't watch their fuel closely!

I'm afraid we are gonna lose all those trails for this season.....in addition to the trails that Pine Falls just gave up a few days ago.

Anyone know what is being considered?

made the mistake of leaving traverse bay to hecla on a holiday weekend,NO GAS,barely made it to riverton puttting along to converse fuel,

i will say that trek accross the lake to hecla, BORING,never been so happy to see the end of that trail, would never do it again

but the trail from hecla village to riverton was nice, would be a shame to see those trails not groomed anymore,

while I'm not 100% sure, I know that the people who groom hecla island are still employed by the provincial gov. so those trails will still be groomed on the island.

Hecla is a nice little ride, but if you are coming from the east I definately recomend cutting strait accross to Gimli first then make your way north to hecla(there is a trail along shore al the way) making sure to gas in Riverton so you will make it to, and through Hecla and back to Riverton for fuel again.

Personally, I HATE the trip accross the lake, and it is possible to run grommed trails from gimli north to Arborg, then to Riverton and into Hecla, if you want to avoid running on the lake the whole way. The Cheyene trail that goes from Gimli to Arborg is a nice trail. You could also run the ditch(hwy#8) from gimli north to Riverton to cut lake riding time down to a minimum. :div20:
