my buddy has a 580 efi and wants to know if the chip for it is worth the money? or if there is any other good performance parts for it. or upgrades that work well with it.

I would just leave it alone. Pipes on a 580 didn't work the best. If anything I would do some clutching on it they like to pull weight about 54 grams in the primary and a orange sping leave the secondary alone they seem to run good right there. As far as a chip waste a money. Get the shocks redone so the thing transfors weight make sure the cluthes are clean she'll run. everybody is so hooked on the pipe crap they run good stock most sleds with the cheap up grade stuff like clutching, shock revalving, heavyer springs in the rear skid you get more bang for your buck doing that stuff then all this aftermarket stuff thats out there.

I had one. Chips not worth the money. Like teamgreen said, just change the primary spring to a heavier one. Bought mine like this. But don't do a whole lot of mods, these sleds are pushing the envelope from the factory. Pipes or a can won't help much, b/c of the EFI. Maybe reeds but don't clutch it a lot.

I had a 95 efi the chip was a waste $$$ goodwinn clutch kit was the best bang for the buck...gas millage even got better after the clutch kit...not sure if it is the same as 97...

had 52g notched with the orange primary spring... and stock secondary worked better than any combo i tried.. can't get pipes for the 97, and they are piston port motor,, not case reed. tel your buddy if its getting up their on miles to rebuild it... waited too long and popped mine last yr.. on the plus side, thing runs great now.

There was a single pipe for EFI through BM, 8HP claim with stock chip and their clutch kit, 95 and newer.

I had a d+d chip in mine and had jan cen racing clutch it.It screamed, was very fast for a 580.

Black Magic made twins cause I had a set on a sled a 94 zr they were the 3 set ever made. I know someone that worked for Blackmagic who got them for me. They where still working the bugs out and got a good deal. To do some testing, they didn't pan out I only seen one other sled that had twin pipes that I have seen. I think D@D made those, they didn't work very well either.

If it were me, I wouldn't mess with anything having to do with the motor but maybe the clutching. These motors were pretty fast for the day but had enough week points without adding any extra crap on them. Loved my 580, don't get me wrong. Remember these sleds ate pistons and some had problems with connecting rods, I don't thing the extra 8-10 hp is worth risking the life on the motor unless money is not an issue. And yes, if your approaching 3000 miles, do at least a top end and replace the intake boots even if they look good, don't even ponder it. Good luck :div20:

They made twins for the carbs from 94-96 but not sure if they could be used with EFI, Buddy of mine put them on his 580 carb and I beat the crap out of him worse than the stock pipe. :frech32: The single pipe is made for EFI, I agree with not messing with the 580 motor, never touched mine, had over 6000 on it when I got rid of it 6 years ago and as far as I know it's never been apart 2-owners later. :div20:
