I purchased this sled last spring and I am just now poking around.

I have the manual and it talks about three different carbs for that year JD, I don't remember the names. (Walbro, ??) Mine has none of the three. It has a Tillotson. Must be retrofitted. Is this carb better?, worse? Any manuals or instructions to tune it?

That's a sweet sled! Good find!

Post a photo of the carb and you'll get more info than you'll ever need.

I will, because I have a cable problem. The cable has two locations on the carb arm it can mount. It is mounted on the spot closest to the carb and therefore the throttle flipper only moves about halfway to the bar before it is WFO. If I mount it in the other hole it is perfect. But, the thing that hold the cable is permanently attached. I think I need to get a second one. But where? I can't describe the doohickey so I will get a picture.

The 2 models of tillotson were HD and HR if I remember correctly. I was never knocked out over the Tillotson carbs but they were the most common back in the day My 73 Elan had the HR (Which is the smaller of the 2) and the throttle was just like you describe but mine had and adjustment just like a brake cable on a bicycle tha you could adjust to get it perfect. I always liked mikunis but on some sleds it was possible to retrofit.

That adjuster You are describing is exactly what i have. And it is adjustable. The problem is it is in a hole too close to the pivot point, so when adjusted correctly at idle the flipper only needs to be pressed halfway to the bar and it is wide open. I unhooked the cable and held in the hole furthest from the pivot point and the flipper would go all the way to the bar before the carb was wide open. Again, I did not take the panels off but I don't think that cable adjuster thing can be taken off and moved to the other hole. It looks riveted almost. I need another one?

This sled has been gone through top to bottom by someone so I am sure this carb or this position for mounting the cable is not stock.
