Which town would be a better place to stay in the Chaudiere Applalches region, Thetford Mines or St. Georges as a home base for doing day trips out of. Looking for any and all opinions.
Thanks
Matt

Both Towns good.
I've never ridden from a hotel in St George only from a friend's house, so I'm not sure of the hotel locations in relation to amenities.
I've stayed in Thetford Mines at Comfort Inn and Balmoral (never, never stay here if you want to sleep) The Comfort Inn is right in the main part of town, with many restaurants in walking distance.
Both Towns have many loops to ride. The snow conditions of the year should be your only consideration. Some years one Town or the Other has more snow.

We have stayed at the Benedict Arnold and it was fine. They screwed up our reservation and we had to sleep in the arcade the first night. I thought having a Pac-Man in the room was cool but my wife's oppinion was different.....
The local trails around there are not great but once you head east toward Lac Etchimen it gets real good....
I can't reccomend trying saddlebagging it enough. With 4 days you can ride to the middle of the Gaspe and back. Why not try that instead of day trips?

If you need to sleep in St Georges I would recommend the Governeur. They are always great. Come into town, pay $5 to the guys at the gas station near Benedict Arnold to put your sleds in their garage overnight so you can take a quick taxi ride to the Governeur and sleep sound knowing your sled is reasonably safe. Alot of gas station owners in Quebec are now letting you store your sled in their bays at night for a very reasonable charge. It works out GREAT for everybody. Your sled stays warm and you can sleep better knowing it's alot safer in the gas station than it probably would be at your hotel. I have seen 12-14 sleds on more than one occasion at one. I always ask everywhere I go and almost every garage is willing.
I have ridden thru Thetford Mines a couple times and only ate at that really weird place that has a night club, disco, diner , danseurs??? . It has a big old courtyard style room setup. I saw a bunch of trailers pulling in there one friday evening. Anyone got any input on that place....never saw the rooms. Got the feeling the place could get a little "roudy & shady" late at night.

That sounds like Balmoral, center courtyard you can park in surrounded by the building, outside of the main part of town, beds hard as a plywood, loud noisy drunk Canadian adults, loud noisy hockey kids running up and down the hall.
If you want to party this is the place. If you want sleep it's not the place.

That's exactly what I sorta figured. I take it you got to experience this first hand.
My condolences!!!!

Are there any places to stay that are on the trail? You guys mentioned taking a taxi to your hotel? Also how is the snow in an average snow year?
Thanks

I would stay at Benedict Arnold in St Georges. Always been good and they have a semi safe coral for the sleds. Food is great.
