Full Version: Direct Drive gear ratio?

I know that a direct drive does not have any gears, so would it be consideed 1/1?

I found a formula to calculate track speed based on driver size and rpm's etc. just wonderin if a DD is 1/1

To get a decent take off with direct drive you need larger than normal drive cogs, which is the opposite of what you need for decent top end. If Poo had to pick, I'd say you have larger than normal drivers, but I don't know what if any comprimise they made. Before I found our Lite, I passed up on several very nice looking Lites, because they had dd.

Hind site being 20/20 :frech32: , I would pass on the direct drive, I thought all LITES where DD, live and learn :frech32: .

you could probably convert it. plenty of chaincase, jackshafts, and front drive axles on e-bay. biggest obstacle would be the support for the jackshaft on the clutch side

why....my kids 340 sprint will pull the skis w/ him and i bet it do all of 50/60. it does 40 w/my big ass on it ooh4.gif and the skis never touch the ground! buttrock.gifClick to view attachment

OK, unless I'm wrong we are talking about the same motor in a lighter sled with dd, in other posts I've stated with my son on his 340 Lite with chaincase it runs over 75mph, big difference

The Lite we have is plenty fast for my son, he love sriding it. I hear on the conversion to chain drive, lotsa parts out there.

The Polaris Cutlass and Lites and the John Deere Spitfire, Snowfire and Sprintfire direct drives use drive axles with smaller than normal drive cogs, to get a gear reduction effect.

8 or 7 tooth drive cogs are common. Also, larger diameter secondary clutches are used on some direct drive sleds.

Excursion, I stand corrected. It seems to me that larger cogs would make take off easier?
REDWEDGE600
That is what I was thinking, like going to a larger bottem gear?
REDWEDGE600
Just a thought now, I see I can get 7 tooth 2.52 p drivers at 5.25 diameter, I am going to investigate whether they will fit with DD. It would give alot of optaions, I need to find out the diameter of the stock ones.

Just investigating for now? :cn:
