We had our annual Valdez Mayors Cup X/C race this weekend and it was a total blast. I was helping my buddy Ryan, "600rr" here on hardcore. Ryan rode great, his IQrr ran great and if not for a mistake in the pits he would have had 2nd place. Ryan was only 2 seconds behind 2nd place. We topped him off on the last pit stop when he really only needed 4 gallons. We got passed in the pits and Ryan couldn't ever get back around the '09 Dragon in front of him. Great job Ryan

The race was awesome and was the most fun I have ever had watching snowmobile racing. Cory Davis showed up on his Factory Prepped '09 SnoPro to spank all the home town boys here in Alaska. Cory won the Munising 300 Pro Class last weekend by smoking the competition by several minutes. Cory is in first place in Semi Pro SnoX on the ISOC series. Cory is bad to the bone and we expected him to dominate all the local racers.

Quick recap. The Mayors Cup is 9 Laps, just under 25 miles per lap, almost all of it wooped out trail through the woods, including a trip up the Hogs Back, a ridge that raises about 1000' above the start/finish line.

Cory took off with the lead and immediately started putting big distance between the rest of the riders. He had a 30 second lead after the first lap and streatched that out to 1:26 by lap 5. It appeared he would be unbeatable on his SnoPro. The top 3 riders were leaving the rest way behind. 4th place was over 5 minutes behind the leader by lap 5. On lap 6 the rider in second Tyler Aklestad on his Global Fuel prepped XP RS began to turn it on. By lap 8 Tyler had caught up to within 10 seconds of Cory. They left the pits on the last lap about 50 yards apart. Cory held Tyler off till the Hogs Back where Ty began to put the pressure on. On the way back down the ridge Cory made a mistake and got bucked off his sled, the SnoPro went cartwheeling into the toolies. As we waited for the guys to finish we were quite surprised to see the Doo and Tyler cross the finish line 10 seconds ahead of the Cat.

It was really fun seeing Cory back from the states to race at home but it was even funner knowing that although he is one of the top racers in the entire country when he comes home he faces competition that he can't take for granted. Tyler Aklestad spanked him, that was fun to watch.

1st place Pro took home $3000. First place Semi Pro took home $1500 and paid back 5 places.

Great fun, 600rr did a great job, we'll be better prepped next time.

Hey Tom, You ever think about being a sports writer?
Sounds like a lot of fun. 225 miles ouch... How long does the take, start to finish?
