I just bought a 1999 ZR700. I want to tweak it a little. I want to do the black magic racing air box, offset flywheel key, heart throb clutch kit, reed spacers, MRBP silencer. I would like feedback before i spend any money. I mostly trail ride and live in new hampshire.Any tips or set-ups that work that any body knows of would be a big help. Thank you ---todd (IMG:style_emoticons/default/i_need_snow.gif)

be careful of gas those sleds would run out at about 70-80 miles to a tank other than that they ran great (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ylsuper.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/i_need_snow.gif) :arctic_cat_rules: (IMG:style_emoticons/default/snowfall.gif)

Forget the BM airbox! Crap! Get some TPI breathers or a D&D breather.
You can't use reed spacers on this motor. It is a case reed motor. You can upgrade them though.

Do the clutch for sure! Rejet.

Check postings on here. There is a ton of good info.

Myself a 99 as well. Breather, heads, twins, clutched. But yes The mileage SUCKS!

get boysen dual stage reeds, they are a biaotch to install, because you have to strip your engine but in the long run they perform great.....they will be in my sled very soon.

jetting depends on if the updates were done, if not, way off. make sure you have all service bulletins done.

I myself will have 3 tpi breathers, d&d clutch kit, Joes mbrp can (thanks joe!), cut heads, plus some more little extras. the milage does suck but hey when the woman carries all the gas you will ever need it's no problem. enjoy slayin people who think that the zr7 is a dog!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smiley-faces7.gif) CHEAPO ZR-700 MODS............. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smiley-faces7.gif) .

-updated CDI box
-updated needle position
-gut air box (ya make it empty inside)
-Goodwyn clutch kit (works mint and requires zero tinkering)
-jet down (go one at a time so as not to burn er down)

I did those mods to both my '99 and '00 ZR-700's with excellent results and little bucks spent. Mileage will jump into the 10 mpg range, performance increase is huge compared to stock.
Cutting the head does make somewhat of an improvement in performance but the down side is that it makes them somewhat finiky to jetting, especially on warmer days. IMHO, not worth the effort / cost.

Happy trails
Rick.

You pretty Much Have to adjust the midrange needle position and main jets. But that is a function of your parts, altitude, temp, pressure.

The BM heads did add some perf. They Cool MUCH better. BUT you have to run Premium with the Trail inserts. You can also switch in Race inserts to run race fuel. Personally I would not suggest that unless you are running raised exhaust ports. If you do that then clutching will be a concern and you might need radically different carb settings.

The boys at BM did say that some guys tryed K&N filters direct to the carbs and No airbox. You have to remount the coils then and the CDI. And the carbs have to be tinkered with. This is best done with Twin pipes though.

As far as jetting with heads, I never had any trouble. Just watch the plugs and piston wash whenever something changes. Like temp.

I actually wrote a little computer program for my sled to take into account altitude, temperature, and barometric pressure to give my jet size.

Liker I said, these sleds had VERY soft clutching. Do that first. You will be surprised.

As far as gutting the airbox. I haven't... I have asked around and have had mixed reactions. I might try it this season to get a reading.

Most of us are gearing down one size though! 23/40.

That;s just my opinion!

They are fun sleds. Last year I took out a 2000 MXZ800 through a field. He was VERY surprised and a little pissed. I was surprised too!

Anyways have fun!
