13 Indy 2280mi Pistons and skirts are mint ring slap is minimal, but can anyone tell me why this motor is so dirty or is it normal? I'm running 56.8-1 ratio and using legend ZX2/SR. All trail miles with some long runs, The sled performs great I can hit 8250rpms and pulls great. can i have some opinions on this before I put it to sleep. 1st pic mag side, ves mag side. Thanks

Am I saying it wrong IDK? The gap between the ring and the piston grove where the ring sits in, like if the piston was a soft or poorly made the ring by going up and down would enlarge the grove on the piston. I think that's what I'm trying to say. lol

That's probably your problem right there. I'm using Redline and don't have near the build up that you do.

Last fall I had mine in at the dealer for a pre-season checkup 1883 miles. I didn't look at it myself but the guy who worked on it said the VES were so clean it really didn't need cleaning bud did it anyway because it was due and because I specifically asked for it. Mine has never run anything but VES Gold but I have no idea if that makes a difference or not.

At 50:1 ratio I am assuming that you have turned your oil pump(mine was running close to 100:1 stock) if you did and if its the first time you are cleaning it @ close to 3 k miles then I think its normal. I always clean mine at every 1 to 1.5k miles. and have notice a bigger buildup since I turned my oil pump up and I don't care i just clean it more often that all. Am running Polaris VES next year im switching to I pone would go Legend but its more money up here 60$ for ves 38$ for ipone and you get an extra Liter and legend is about 72 $ delivered. none local is selling it so i have to order it.

Thanks I normally don't do that many miles in a season on one sled but this sled I couldn't get off of the new Indy lol. Yes it would be the first cleaning and never saw any of my sleds with that much buildup (XC) I guess I'll have to start cleaning them @ 1,000mi or so, I always ran a couple of sleds a year 7-900mi each but ran this Indy full time. Thanks for all the info guys Should I stay with the Legend? the pistons and walls are perfect.

I am surprised to see all this buildup in the exhaust port. I have most of the sleds I come into contact with converted to Legend and have never seen one like this. I am happy to see it kept the pistons in good shape, but curious what is going on. My sleds use quite a bit of oil, and I often add it to the fuel tank as well, still never seen anything close to this kind of build up. Do you idle it a lot? Add anything to the fuel?

Mark Can't say what the hrs are but 2200mi, I run this sled hard VT trails, I do not idle a lot because of the overheating issue. This sled runs a constant 125-131deg (ice scratchers down 100%) I will only see 160-70deg refueling or long plowed roads (low snow areas). Could it be the engine isn't hot enough to burn the shit off at 125-31deg ??? One more important question could this be a coolant leak?? Ooh and I look and change the plugs every 500mi, and run 93-91 oct. all the time. The only other thing I add to the tank is Star-tron. Thanks guys

How hard do you run the sled?
I use VES in mine and run it HARD.
The blades weren't too bad at 1,000 miles.
I cleaned them this spring at 3,200 miles and deposits were minimal.
( About the same as the first cleaning and at 2,000 miles)
I pulled the y-pipe and the ports were gummed up but not to the extent as your pics.
They cleaned up nicely with a rag and carb cleaner.
Fuel: oil ratio is 55-60:1

that being that dirty is a surprise to me also. I've done pre-season services to sleds that have run legend oil for a couple seasons now. and some I didn't even have to clean the valves. and the wye pipe and exhaust pipe were clean and oil free. meaning the oil burned very clean with no deposits.i have seen a lot of plugged activation holes in cylinders with ves oil. none with legend. you mentioned anti-freeze? is your sled using it? this maybe what's going on? I have a lot of customers using legend and haven't seen anything like that. and I also use it.

Anti-freeze yes after 4-500mi it's an inch below the fill bottle line, I thought it might be from expansion and exiting out the over flow tube. In 2200mi I put in about a cup of coolant...

Don't they recommend the first cleaning like at 500 miles or so(going by memory) to get rid of the crap they coat the engines with. Remember I had plugs issues that stopped after I burned the 6th plug I switch to iridium and switch back to Regular plug and never burnt a plug after so I think maybe that you have that buildup because of the breaking stuff. I would clean it good and monitor I bet your buildup will be less form now on. I could be wrong this is just one of thoes Theory of mine. my sled was fouling plugs like there's no tomorrow at first once I got about 1200 miles it got better and this season I ran on reg ngk and never burnt one.

Thanks all Everything cleaned up pretty easy and looks really clean, I like the fact that the guillotines are steel and they clean up nice. I'm going to stay with the Legend oil for this fact that my pistons and skirts are in GREAT shape. I'll check it after 500mi next season, just waiting on gaskets to put it all back together and fog.

Maybe it's way too rich with that much carbon, and not from the oil at all? Anyone ever put a PC-V on one of these, and tune it right on the money for jetting? If it is too fat on top end, running it hard alot will make it carbon up more than "normal" trail riding would, because they are fairly lean at trail riding speeds, just a thought.

Had a great internet discussion with nortstarrick in my situation I've decided to back off one full turn on my oil adjustment screw from the 3.5 before running my new Indy. The pistons and skirts are in that good of shape I'm gonna run the legend oil and check everything out at lower mileage intervals.
