Hey guys, looking at buying a second sled for the wife and daughter. Possibly myself for 3/5 day trips. Dealer said the 5000 wasn't any slower cheaper and lighter than the 7000. Has anybody tryed both, any input would be great. I think I would be happier with 7000 but never drove either one. Also would need some input on making this thing beat a 1200. Lol.

My wife has had two 5000's, and my mother has had two 7000's, and we ride together all the time. In my opinion the 7000 is not worth the extra money. The engine on the 5 is lower and further back than the 7, and the 7 has a rad mounted high and up front, those two factors make the 5 much more nimble and fun to drive. we've raced them multiple times, they are very close, but the 7 does have a little more top end, not much. I've seen 96 on the 5 and 99 on the 7.

My dad has a 07 Jag which is the 5000 motor. I know there are over 10,000 miles on that sled.
It is a nice durable engine with decent mileage.
I always thought that engine in the new chassis with 137" skid (to balance out the weight) would be a nice sled
Seems the 5000's are quite a bit cheaper but the 7000's sound a lot better

There are many other threads debating this very question. Most notable differences are 7000 has 1.25 track, amazing engine and exhaust tone, a little higher performance factor, and no TCL with better chaincase inards. 5000 has 1 track lug, industrial exhaust sound. Either is a great trail sled, and IMO the 5000 is a perfect 2nd sled to have in the stable.

The 5000 has 125hp not 110hp. Just wanted people to know.

Like mentioned above check the other treads comparing the 5000 to the 7000.

I have the 14 7000 never road or compared to the 5000 or 1200 but the 7000 gives (older) 800's a fit up to 80 mph.

I don't think you would be disappointed in ether sled.

I know when my folks got their 14's xf800 le, and an f1100na when lined up it wasnt even a race lol. mind you this was at 3-400 miles on both sleds. The 800 would graib the launch, then continue to pull further and further away until we let off. That said the 1100 seems to get stronger and stronger as it gets ridden. It will surprisingly pull powder wheelies(not tail stands), we noticed that this year. Not a bad sled by any means. The cost difference is a big factor though, i mean theres gotta be close to a 3-5g difference when looking at leftovers.

I have tested both, maybe the sound has something to do with it as well. The 5000 was studded vs the 14 LTD wasn't,both had near 3000 miles on them. The 7000 seems to pull more in the mid range then the 5000 and in the conditions we ran in the 7000 was 6 - 7 mph faster. Neither sled came close to breaking 100 just so you are aware, the 5000 didn't break 90. This is via GPS . For me the shocks on the 14 LTD seemed a bot off vs the 5000, but I think it was more the set up on the Fox Floats. I didn't notice any higher center of gravity on either, I weigh about 250 lbs, so this may have factored into everything as well. Cheers

Hey paulcat;

I ve tried both on a demo ride one complete day on a ski area last year.back and forth I went first the 7000 then the 5000 all day long.

I bought the 2015 ZR 5000. I could have had a 7000 demo unit for 1500 more. Chose not to as I didn't like the loud exhaust and vibration level in the handlebars on the 7000. We are long distance saddlebag tourers and the quieter and I think smoother 5000 fit the bill.

However the nytro motor did have more low end I noticed and I really liked the underhood radiator on the 7000. It could make a difference on those late season rides when it's icy out.

Some have reported that the 7000 does not have much more top end than the 5000. I think if I spent the money for the 7000 I would want that sled to go over the ton every day.

Hope this helps.

I snow checked a 5000LXR for the wife, and to have as a spare when she's not riding. You need a spare when you ride a turbo :bc2:
I recently had the opportunity to ride both the 5000LXR, and the 7000LXR, and in my opinion, there's no way the 7000 is worth 3300 more than the 5000, although I really did like the radiator on the 7000
