Alright,

My dealer has an 09 demo TNT eTec he is willing to let me have for a great price.... however, all the reviews I've read about it talk about reliability issues. I was also looking at an 09 TNT 500SS, and reviews on this seem great. I guess I'm looking for some guidance on what to get...

What would you guys do???? What is your reaction to an Etec vs a tnt 500 ss?

I'd be inclined to go with the E-Tec. I rode a demo last year and was very impressed. Excellent low end and responsive.

the 500ss is renown for it's reliability but the e-tech is obviously on the leading edge of technology. i'm in the exact same boat as you... not sure if i should play it safe and get the 500ss or spend a bit more on the e-tech. i'm gonna wait out the winter and see how the reliability is on the e-tech. not to be sound like a dick but i'll let everybody else be the test pilots on the new engine.

my 2 cents....

Read an article in SNOW TECH----They said the 500ss got within 2 or 3 miles a gallon of the E-Tech.
I'ld buy the 500ss. My 2 cents.

Being twenty six years old if you like to ride hard hand play around Id go with the 600 E-tech I think that you will get bored with the 500 to quickly....... but I guess it all depends on your riding style. Well I just realised that you had an 04 600 and now have the 500ss so I guess you would know the difference in power as far as reliabilty im sure the 600 will have some bugs all new sleds do personally I would get the e-tech but really either decision is a good one. But if you can get the 600 for a good price or for close to the price as the 500 then having that extra 100cc would be nice along with the little better fuel mileage and only one pull to get it started and less oil consumption seems like a better bang for the buck, I never worry about reliabilty becasue they all can and will have there problems thats why we have warranty.

uh, the 2008 TNT has a 597 cc engine...it's almost a 600 CC sled (seen reports of 112-115 hp range) so it's in the same ball park as an e-tech at 600 cc's. So if it were me, I'd be looking at other features then the cc's of the sled because they are "almost" identical in displacement. If you are looking for a flat out trail sled, either is good. If you are looking for a sled that will be a rocket, then get an 800. Personally, I'd get the 500SS motor as it's rock solid and bullet proof - many years of tried and true experience and parts available. Flip side is when you start the e-tech, there is "0" smoke. It will be cheaper in the long run regarding oil cost, however, when you do have to purchase oil, doo has a recommended oil that you MUST use (and it is expensive from what I hear) whereas for the 500SS, you can do mineral oil, semi or full synthetic. The E-tech also demands at least 91 octane whereas the 500SS can use anything...even with 10% alcohol added...lastly, the plugs in the E-tech are much more expensive then for the 500SS. So again, as far as the frame & cosmetics & setup, they are *about* the same - few minor differences...ride and top end is also approx. the same (and I've seen alot of guys with 2008 TNT's depending on snow conditions, tracks, clutching yield between 93 to 96 mph top end...have not seen or heard of anyone with a TNT that has gone over the 100 mph barrier). If you are looking at top end only, don't get either and get a 800R. However, I rode my TNT last year mainly on trails and for the money, you can't beat this sled period. Here's a pic of the sled with all of the various mods...

I admited that the two sleds would be close in power I had a 99 mxz 600 the same engine as the 500 and the difference between it and the 600sdi was quite a bit more however in these new light chassis it wouldnt be as big as a difference but either way if the etech is anything like the sdi it has more in it. May not be the biggest factor but for the same price or close its just another contributing factor. Really its a toss up both sleds are good sleds and like you said if hes looking for the lake runner he should get the 800.
