Default 2004 pro xr 440 carb troubles

hey guys i need some help/opinions.
i had my 440 out for the first run of the year today , and i noticed a studder in the engine. when stopped , if i tried to give the sled full throtle at a dead stop it would take off slowly and almost like it was loading up on gas , it felt as if it was running on one cylinder , let off the gas and ease it on to full throtle and the thing takes off like a rocket , and it does the same again if cruising at half throtle for extended periods of time and then go right to full throtle again and it does the same studder it does when stopped to full throttle , anybody have any encounters similar to this or got an idea on what it could be?
i was thinking maybe changing the clip position on the needle valve?

anybody have any ideas? it would be VERY apreciated

i was hoping it was something simply diagnosed like chipped reeds or something
as for my setup i would imagine it is close to stock , i have only had this skidoo over the summer and i didnt want to take the carb apart untill i knew where the sled was too in regards to how it runs.
so to answer your questions im assuming it is stock , the sled was trail converted by the polaris dealership , so if there is any carb issues involved with trail converting this sled then it was done by the dealer , otherfrom that i think it could be pretty well stock. sorry for the lack of info

The polaris specs are way off as far as jetting is on this thing. Also dont keep it a partial throttle as it will run lean. They were not designed to run there and the needle is to lean. You have to have a sort of snowx throttle on and off.

Clean your carbs! And put in a fresh tank of gas. I say this as you state that this was the first run of the year. If your like most of the guys I here about you take it off the trailer and try to go. I clean my carbs every year before I ride any of my sleds just because you never know and it dosn't matter how much stabile you put in the tank. I have had the pilots get gunked up using that as well. Clean the carbs.

turns out it was just the homemade can leaning out the engine , put the stock silencer on it and it was a completely diffrent machine , if i puts it back on ill just richen it up in the carb , but for now i think its going to stay as is.
thanks very much for the good info , not so much for dirty comments
thanks guys!

Dont worry about the comments and continue to ask questions. That is how I learned lots of reading with a few questions here and there. Your going to love the sled.

You say the sled was trail converted by the dealer? If possible you should ask the dealer if they put the trail needle in the carbs. The trail needle adds fuel in the 1/4 throttle range and will prevent to motor from burning down.

Also, run the timing box on "E", you could run "F" or "G" if you get a batch of bad fuel but "E" is the setting for Pump Gas.

Also, Pump Gas means 92 octane and nothing less. Running inferior fuel is not good for this motor.

Also, the '04 440 has an issue with the center bearing on the crank. If the dealer or you haven't already addressed this issue then you are on borrowed time. The sled won't make it past about 10-15 tanks of fuel and you will blow the crank. There is a thread in the pinned topics discussing different ways to fix this problem. Every tank of fuel you run through the motor is taking life off the crank. This issue must be fixed or you will be very dissapointed here very soon.

Don't drive the sled like a sally, it's meant to be driven hard. Thats how it should be ridden, like a dirt bike. On and Off the throttle continually.

and were there some recall on the bearing or something that the dealer put in a longer lasting bearing?
