Number should be stamped on the case, in front, toward the PTO side of the motor. Might also be a sticker present on or near the MAG.

Those are the numbers, but they don't align with the choices from 1997. That motor would be a EC580PL01, and that isn't a model code from that year.

I've checked 96 and 98 to see if it might be from one year off, but that motor code isn't there either.

Serial number implies it's a 97 motor, though.

Also - in '95, the motor numbers were EC58PL02/03/04. The motor seems like it's a '97 from the serial number, but the code at the end ("01") doesn't line up with any motor code that I can find for that year. The PL01 was used in '94, but the serial number should start with 94 (yours starts with 97). I'm going to go check some numbers on one of my sleds to see if I can break any of this down further.

Ok... checked one of my machines that's similar in age... Your motor number says EC580PL012 on the sticker. Drop the "0" before and after the "PL" and you get EC58PL12. That's an XLT SP motor - 270 mains, 35 pilots, air screw out 1.5 turns.

Why did the previous owner swap the motor?

Because the stock motor blew up and so they just bought a used motor, so is my motor the 580 or 600?

Seems like the carbs jets and the motor code line up, so they either bought the same motor, or did a "complete swap" of all necessary parts.

If you know the sled is an XLT SP, you're definitely good to go.
