Not sure if this is the right forum for this.... Posting this for a friend.

Recently, he bought a 2001 Polaris 550. It runs fine but only tops out at about 70.

Speedo is correct, we ran it side by side with two other sleds.

I am assuming everything is stock and not well maintained.

I am guessing that the lack of top end has to do with the clutching.

Anyone else have one of these things?

Only thing he has tried so far is a new belt. Gained a couple of MPH.

Also bought a yellow secondary spring, but has not installed it.

Thanks!

sounds about right, that is what they are geared for. you can gear them up a little as long as you don't increase track length or lug height. don't expect it to be meteor streaking down the trail, it was made for low to midrange RPM.

My wife has a 2003 550 classic - depending on conditions it will top out at 65 - 75 miles an hour. So you buddies seems about right.

There is nothing wrong with you friend's sled. 70 mph is about all it's got. Those 550s are only about 75 hp at best.

Same here, i can easily squeeze 70mph out of my 93 440 fan. So...theres gotta be some cheap ways to make those rather disappointing 550s go faster, right?
