they sold a conversion kit to make the 01 VES. What is the VIN number? The 01's were fast. From what I have found it is becuase of the secondary clutch, no decompression ports, and also becuase adding power valves took away where the coolant went at that spot on the cylinder so they run hotter taking away power.

It seems to engage late and it does a quick clunck in. The only way I can feel to diagnose is if I Rode another that is hooked up right. Love the sled raw power so I just want to try and make it a long lasting sled. Now that I know more form redaingball these threads I will have to loom a the weights and spring colors, etc.
Still learning.

Hey Trosell, thats what it all about, learning. Don't believe the bad wrap the 800's get. It's mostly the guys out in the mountains that hold it to the bar for minnutes on end going uphill. Thats a ton of stress on a motor. If you dont do what I said every time you ride, you'll be fine.
Glad to hear that your getting help on your new sled. Hopefully someone more experienced than me can help you with your clutching.

I am loving the reading here. Lots of lots of pages of 800 xc or even the 700 and 600 stuff. Wow clutching is way too much to learn for a single time and I donor want to be fooling with it. I weight 175 and ride from 500-1000 maybe up to 2000 so I just need a good all around clutch set up.

I don't WOT too long so I do give it a break I just got a new speedo cable so that will be installed and I think the new belt at the end of last year will let me ride ride ride that's all I want. I want some thumb exercise but that damn recoil is a killer.

Yeah i searched and studied on here for weeks about the best clutching everyone pretty much has there own thing that is the best and it is confusing becuase the 01 has a different secondary than any others and most of the clutching advice is for the 02+ xc 800s. Basically a lot of people just switched the 01 over to the button secondary clutch the newer 800s come with.

The stock helix in the 01 secondary is not near aggressive enough and hot seat is one of the only places that you can still get one for it since it is such a rare secondary so I ended up just buying a clutch kit from hot seat and it works amazing. Also 01s are jetted way rich stock and run so much better when you put smaller main jets in.

Basically they were way off on tune box stock and got a bad rep on power but if you clutch and jet them they are really fast. Also get the SLP pull start rope it is synthetic winch rope and won't break this engine has no decompression ports and is really high compression but it keeps the boys away from a real mans sled haha

no doubt about it, the pull on the 01 is pretty stiff. Especially if its cold.

But proper technique goes a long way, I prefer to put my left foot in the footwell, the doing a couple slow pulls just to get things loosened up a bit.
Then pull using my leg and body weight

Good luck getting anything for it from HSP. They are pretty much done with polaris parts. Easisest thing to do is swap the secondary to the button style and clutch like the 02+. Power is very similar and so is performance.

I had a 01 800 that I also used the HSP clutch setup on. I believe it was a 38X roller helix. This would be a very rare piece now a days. Like others have stated when clutched and jetted this sled was fast. In fact mine would routinely bury the speedo over 120 out on the lake. However mine lost it's crank at full speed and pretty much took the whole motor with it. This was with 5000 miles on it. I just about crapped myself when it let go at 110 mph. Keep an eye on crank run out and balance your primary clutch. An yes after a weekend of riding my shoulder would be sore from starting it. I do miss my 800's.

from what I've found :
02 rmk jug w/o decomp holes p/n ends with 328
02 xc jug w/ decomp holes p/n ends with 329
03+ rmk jug w/o decomp 338
03+ xc jug with decomp 339

I believe the (minor) difference is in the castings, exhaust port area. I run a 329 + 339 on my 02
