Default NYS trail opening dates. Major confusion!

I want to play devils advocate, we have quite a mess here. We all hear stories about people riding too soon, but is the information readily available? From my research, it is far from clear and hard to find.

First things first, why are club websites not updated with 2013 opening dates? The two most common gripes are people not staying on trails, and riding before the season starts. Give the dates! The only clubs in the northern tier I could find opening dates on their websites (linked from NYSSA) were

OF -open Snowdeo
Redfield - Open December 9th
Pulaski Boyls - Open December 18th (a Wednesday? even more confusing)

*more found, see below

My wife and I got a quick ride in (new sled for her) this past Sunday at dark in Kasoag. Met the club pres, great guy, and he thanked me for waiting (hunting ended at dusk that day, and I was aware of that) I later posted a picture on FB snowmobile sites only to start major arguments, and see yet more confusion! One person even thought the North Country trails did not open until 1/1/14!

It has taken me an hour to do the research I have done. No dates on trailconditions.com which most sites link to.

I know the clubs are busy, but why not take the time to make it more clear? Even a piece of paper taped to the window of all these web cams that are on, which are surely going to attract snowmobiles to an area that may not be open.

Lastly I think the NYSSA should request that the DMV includes a small print out of this with each registration

Deer and Bear Hunting Seasons - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

This would at least show a clear line from Northern to Southern Tier

We have all the resources to make this information public, yet here we are, still confused.

I am going to go out on a limb and say at some people do not know when they are riding where and when they should not. Not all, but some. I was a victim of this confusion many years ago. I just did not know, and was schooled by some hunters I met in the bar that night.

My vent for the day. Feet of snow will be falling this week on the hill, and sad stories will be told for sure in the very near future about a lost trail because of confusion.

Can't say all of it. Your guess is as good as any. Can only confirm Kasoag, Redfield, and OF

I don't know what the right answer is, but I would say, call the club who maintains the trails you plan on riding and ask them when they open.

For a weekend ride, that could mean up to 8 clubs for me on the hill....at least. The clubs are all relatively small, unless you want to ride in circles.

There is no reason why clubs dont post the date for trail openings provided there is snow. They have websites. There is the ability. No dates though. Odd

Thanks for the info. I believe that is the only way to get from the hill to Snodeo by sled? Seems to me the extended muzzle loader has something to do with elevation?

Gates are great, but expensive. Really hoping those gates are respected this weekend
