I rode from Millinocket to Caribou and back this Thurs - Fri. It was very good. However the whole state is seeing pretty warm temps today and tomorrow. Unfortunately it's starting to feel t=like the beginning of the end. I am going up the weekend anyway as I have a new sled to pick up n Houlton....

all about who is grooming still - check club Facebook pages & mesnow.com trail reports. southern and eastern County trails were smooth last weekend and now but central and western were not. it's supposed to get cold with blowing snow on Wed/Thurs so hopefully folks will be going out again with tuckers. as for where to stay, folks seem to like Caribou convention center, Washburn, not sure about Houlton, but Shin Pond would put within easy reach of Millinocket and KI/Jo Mary trails too. I would plan to stay at different places....maybe call ahead to see if you can stop where you end up....if their trails get better Portage and Eagle Lake (they actually did groom last week) are also popular to stay.

Caribou Cabins is very reasonable and right on the trail.

ETA : If you don't want to go that far I'd say Shin Pond Village or Mt Chase Lodge. Either place will give you an honest report of conditions if you call and ask

Riding solo? I'd probably just stay at Caribou Convention Center, 3 or more I'd try Caribou Cabins, both right on the trail not far from each other.

If you stay at the Convention Center, make sure you tell them you're snowmobiling - it gets you a discount....

We stayed at Eagle Lake a few weeks ago, at the Overlook Motel.. we got a cabin but I'm sure the motel is clean and comfortable. Nice place, just a bit of a hassle when the lakes aren't rideable, which they weren't when we were there. You will spend a lot of time on ITS 85 if the lakes aren't rideable.

Caribou Cabins is great, might be a little more expensive for a twosome though. Caribou is a great launch pad, can go anywhere from there.

Honestly, if you are going north of Shin Pond, it's not much more to go right to Ft. Kent. I think next time I will just stay in Ft. Kent as it's got everything there and it's great to ride out of. The Northern Door is a great motel.

X2. This time of year you can't go wrong. Anything from St. Agatha up you'll be in prime time.
