Volunteer burnout and or comittment is a issue for sure. Its why we get pretty thin skinned when we're criticised....

As for trail reporting.....its been a gong show since day 1

A big part of the problem is the same one that plagues our entire sport......liability/litigation and accountability for same.

Our club and district pushed to have real time plain language info posted on the various electronic forums....club website, ofsc map and website, even public forums like this. The powers that be and lawyers all freaked out that too much info ( detailed, timely, documented) would be used against us all by the asshats who inevitably sue everyone whenever they can.

In fact the entire ofsc risk management strategy from signage to trail reporting is all focused on these issues and not what is actually best practice or a better product.

It has been suggested that if you set up a detailed and chronological trail condition reporting system.....the 1st time it is forgotten or omitted or has a tech issue.....some clown will use that as leverage to demonstrate negligence and litigate. Better off either not reporting or keeping the info vague and not committed to detail.

We have personally seen evidence of this sad truth in our club plenty of times.
We've been sued for sledders hittin the groomer, crashing their sleds, getting lost, blahblahblah

We've had our president as well as other volunteers sued personally as well as the club and ofsc

Id love to see real time reporting of conditions, grooming.
There are many volunteers in our club who have and are providing many suggestions for just that.
In fact it has been a tooic of discussion over the last couple yrs at every monthly club meeting

There are a few younger tech savvy volunteers who have tried several methods as well as we are currently trialing a couple methods to frequently report trail conditions and grooming to our own website as well as have offered to import that data to the ofsc for the trail guide.

Im not a part of it but have seen only frustration as well as the constant spectre of liability as a blockade
It is framed " if you say the trail has x many cm of snow and is good to go" somebody will use that as inaccurate or unqualified when they are suing .......as well once you start detailed reporting the moment you fail to update it will be viewed as negligent.
All this and of course the wildly unpredictable weather and reality of trails.....most of which are on water

Lets just go back to carbs, analog comms and limit sledders to those who dont mind smellin like gas, changin belts and plugs often, and dont have a lawyer on retainer.
And computers not any part of the equation....on the sled or to read the map.....fawkin map should be a tattered oil stained item jammed in the trunk with a few fresh plugs and some pepperettes.

Thanks, very well said. Love your writing style. LOL
I kinda figured it was a CYA thing with the OFSC.
Being an old guy, I,ll just continue to use my own judgment, and decide IF the time is right for me to be on the trails, or not. If the gates aren,t locked, that is. LOL
I really appreciate the time and effort you have put in to explaining the reasoning behind the way the OFSC handles this.
Thanks again, and happy sledding.

glad you lads worked it out... I proposed that the OFSC could perhaps charge a little for their app like FCMQ does and use those funds to improve it, like simple click routining start/finish. Recently i found a use for facebook as some clubs use it to communicate conditions.
Back on subject...... Conditions in this area have been top notch all season. Big big thanks to the Missing Link, Mattawa, and North Renfrew Clubs. Not my local club but we are fortunate enough to to enjoy them. Helped by giving some donations at their poker run early March.. Really Really nice job.
Conditions look ok up here today ... a little snow this week in Pet and Chalk should help.
Running the A from Pet to Mattawa tomorrow and La Vérendrye area Saturday. Will update
