The BEAST moved a handful of trails back to yellow, . as per Rugger's link above. The OFSC map will likely not be updated until Monday.

It hit or miss. Dry trails are very reasonable.. swampy trails can mean wasting a day stuck in the mud... a few volunteers have found out the hard way already

Should have a rock hard base in places now that saw early grooming pre-Christmas

On another note.. drove up around North Bay and Suds on holidays.. not a ton of trail progress there.. many trails from the highway yet to see a track. Same swamp issues as us I imagine. Signs of grooming in Cobden/Pembroke and Stonecliffe

Default Deep River/Stonecliffe etc

Day rode from Rolphton yesterday.

Lots of snow everywhere from Deep River up.

Deep River to Rolphton has had a initial groomer pass but was chewed up and shelled out with lots of snow but no rocks or dirt.

Rolphton A up to Stonecliffe was groomed and lots of snow but no firm base. Still great riding but loosy goosy. The 191 and 195 loops were groomed and excellent as always.

The grooming stopped just north on the A out of Stonecliffe....looks like no grooming at all yet this season??
Broken groomer or other issue??
We were breaking trail and plenty of tag alders and even bigger sapling trees overgrown. We turned around and did the 195/196/191 and returned to Rolphton which the A trail had been regroomed

Ran to Deep River and back late afternoon....shelled out snowcross conditions...fun but loose and a lot of work.....lots of snow...no rocks or dirt whatsoever.

Despite plenty of snow they seem behind to what they typically would have been at this time of year.
Machinery down/volunteer energy/a couple wet spots keeping the groomer from looping?? All possible.

Lots of snow so its good to go to get out and shakedown ride and other early season riding....just don't expect to put on big miles and or full season riding conditions...

Don't fiorget to gas in Stonecliffe regardless how much you have...big void of no gas from Stonecliffe to Mattawa....no food either

Default Local Establishments

While we are waiting for trails to set up, and start our never ending quest for "free soup", i thought an update as to the changes to our locales would be in order.
1. THE MARLBOROUGH PUB in North Gower is new and improved and has moved to Roger Stevens drive, the new trail to get you there is just West of the old one.
2. LOVE THAT BAR (LTB), in Pakenham is no longer, good news is (rumors are) that it has new owners, and a name change. I am unsure what the new atmosphere is like, but if they have free soup who cares!
3. Metcalfe has a new pub, called METCALFE FARE pretty much at the corner of Hiway 31and their main street, towards centreville. Access should be right off the A trail just east of 31(not confirmed just my opinion) or from the old gas bar just take the road it would be a 1 minute toot to get there.
4. WHITEWATER BREWING COMPANY has opened a fancy brew pub in Cobden, on the north side of town, unsure of any snowmobile access, but a worthy stop even if the sleds are in the trailer.

Been out riding North Gower and Osgoode areas, as can be expected pretty good in spots, very dangerous in others as some ditches are full of water and not filled in with groomer snow. Marlborough forest is good, most swamps are tracked but require some muddy water hole crossings, railbeds and feilds are high speed only a few where plowed(but not deep furrowed just light no till type) and the Rideau crossings are well tracked, a little slushy at RiverBend Pub( BTW no free soup, but the eggrolls still rock), do not stop for a smoke next to the channel marker, keep on gas, a seadoo floats a SKIDOO does not, dont get confused on this one!!!

Our group never goes past the River Bend on the Rideau. We cross there to get to the Beast trails. We tend to go west of there more than east, and often stop at the restaurant just off of old hwy 16. Cann,t remember if it is still called Charlies, or The Rideau Restaurant. Are guys running on the Rideau now ? How about on the inlet from the gas stations on 43 out to the main Rideau River ?

My buddy lives on the river west of Helens, pliers his track yesterday says it's good. Lots of sled traffic. One of his buddies lives between him and Helen's and check ed the ice in front of his place, 4".

Uugh, only 4 inches makes me kinda nervous. We won,t be on that anytime soon.
Is the oval track for the bikes built yet ? and are the running on the ice from the gas stations out to the main part of the river on the inlet that goes under the hwy 43 bridge ?

Fwiw he said where his buddies place is would be the worst spot between him and Helen's. Wouldn't catch me out there either. No clue on your other questions.

Was out for a couple of runs over the last few days.

The BEAST 200 (TCT) from Stittsville was in great shape as usual. The A between Dwyer Hill & the BEAST 206 (bypass Ashton swamp) was in good shape but was getting rough by late Monday afternoon. It is really nice to have the 206 that bypasses the Ashton swamp as for years the south west part of the BEAST trails system was unreachable from Stittsville until the swamp froze.

E104 to the BEAST 311 (trail bed CP to Smith Falls) was in pretty good shape for early January. The 311 was rough on Saturday as there is a lot of exposed stones on the rail bed. By Monday with the fresh snow I hit less of the stones but the BEAST will need to talk with Lanark Co about removing the stones & putting down stone dust for next year.

As usual the run down to the south west BEAST trails was followed by a snack at the Ashton Pub.

Hopefully the trails hold with the rain & warmer temps over the next couple of days.
