Just aquired a yamaha exciter 1988 sled. It will not stay running when you give it gas. they have not been running in a couple of years. How do you adjust the carb and could it be another problem?

Have you cleaned the carbs out? Also check the fuel pump (its under the airbox). If they previous owner did not drain the fuel tank it will gum them right up. Take both the main and pilot jets out of the carbs and make sure they are clean and have no blockages. Once the carbs are back in start it on one cylinder at a time (remove 1 spark plug wire) and use the idle adjustment screw ( screw with knobby handle on the right side of the carb if you sitting on the seat) to correct the idle. Screw it in or out to get the engine to idle at 1100-1300 rpm. each cylinder is idling right, you may have to mess with the idle mixture screws, i don't know the specs on them so if its not on the inside of the hood or drive belt cover you'll have to look it up in a manual.
